Thanks for posting this one Joe.
A while back I found a vintage hat at local antique shop that was labeled 100 percent wool and the quality was outstanding (I wish I could remember the name of the maker). The pouncing was so well done that I found it hard to believe it was wool. I didn't purchase it because it was too small, but I have been keeping an eye out for others since. My thought is, I'd be afraid to buy one online without actually putting my hands on it first. But if I can hold it and feel the craftsmanship, I'd like to have a few in my collection if only for times when I know it won't be exposed to rain.
Great hat!!!
It's been discussed many times, and people like @Daniele Tanto , @mayserwegener or @steur have repeatedly talked themselves hoarse: As Joe said as with fur felt, the experience with modern wool felt hats is in no way transferable to the old hats from before the 1950s and 60s. While they were generally cheaper than fur felt back then, they still didn't "lose their shape in the first rain." In Europe, there were large centers like Monza in Italy, Guben in Germany, or the Aude Valley in France that specialized in wool felt. There's even a specific thread for this:

Im sure glad I dont wager on the weather around here! Dark Grey, breezy and really humid three hours ago.... now its sunny and nice. Mailman dropped off a box with a nice new-to-me Stanwell bent pipe. Pulled on the Thoroughbred to make the pipe look better. Got here a couple days early... guess I get to do some cleaning this afternoon and fire it up with a tall adult beverage

Good choice and great look, Nathan.

Now that has some presence! Gorgeous, Rob.

Both of them cool, Nathan, but the wide ribbon Melton wins it for me.

That Melton is nice, but I think you make the wiser choice.

Couldn’t go wrong there Nathan. Looking good.

Thanks gentlemen. I went with the Melton today.

Also finally received my Florsheim penny loafers back from the cobbler with new heels. I hate going weeks without these guys - they have become a fashion essential for me.

Happy humpday friends.
