Jlee, yes, it's a modern Stetson. It's Stetson's linen "Gilchrist". The material was originally sewn to the brim...I cut the stitching so I could move the material around where I wanted to achieve different looks. I also like more of the brim showing as well.

g.durand, love that VS Granite. Nice color.

DJH, that's a nice Disney Milan. I like that hat!

Orangegrad, love that Akubra Fed IV...I've been wanting to get an Indy style fedora for a long time now. It looks nice my friend. You wear it well.

TJ - what I like about the Fed IV is that in the two colors I own - Moonstone and Heritage Fawn - it really doesn't have to look like an Indy hat. Now the rest of the world thinks any fedora is an Indy hat - so there's really nothing we can do about that. But I've chosen to not bash mine with an Indy bash. To me, it just looks more like a 1930s full brim and full crown fedora - not necessarily something an action hero would wear. I have no plans to purchase it in the dark brown color.

And I purchased the Deluxe version. The fur is very thick and firm. I imagine it will take quite a bit of wear for these to soften. They've even been in the rain and still are quite stiff. I'm in no hurry.

I notice a lot of straws and Panamas as I'd expect for this time of year. If your weather is anything like mine here in Cleveland, you never know when a thunderstorm will strike. It happened to me several years ago when we were dropping our daughter off at college. Quite the downpour - and nowhere to hide. Really made a mess of a Cuenca Panama. Do you folks not have rain where you live? We're as likely as not to have afternoon storms any day here along the Great Lakes, making wearing a straw something of a risk. I don't think I'd ever purchase an expensive Montecristi for that reason alone.

You are denying yourself one of life's true pleasures, my friend, if you allow yourself to be paralyzed by the irrational fear of damage and never grace your head with a fine Montecristi. They are more resilient than most people realize or give them credit for, and with proper care and prudent precautions(I carry a dry cleaner's plastic bag everywhere with me in my camera bag in the event of an errant downpour), develop incomparable character and exquisite patina. They only get better with use, and age much better than the best felt hats, in my opinion.

That is an ideal brim width for a straw hat for most folks, I think. Thanks for the nod again on my ubiquitous OPTIMO!

Jared, it's most definitely a light tan, "milktoast" is a word I believe I've heard describe similarly colored hats in the past.

Jared, I would agree with your sentiment today that it's hard to go wrong in a VS. Fine looking one you've got there yourself.

1mach1--I like the cattleman's crease--the way my grandfather and father wore theirs.

Joao--I always enjoy seeing your Westerns, and the different locales, too.

Jeff--to paraphrase Jared, You can't go wrong in a Lee (either). Both are spectacular.
