Snow last week left our clients snowed in until we dug them out. I had to run the shovel for a day because the snow blower couldn't handle the heavy, wet snow.

A weather break between last evenings rain and tonights expected 4"-6" snow accumulation has me out early. Currently the temp is 38'F and comfortable. Hatted in my vtg. Stetson Stratoliner in green. Something about wearing green after a few days of gray that brightens the spirit.

Harold & The Princess


Our Quixotic weekend began with freshly fallen snow Friday morning. Even after our long Winter I still found its ephemeral beauty enchanting.



There could be but one choice for this snowy Friday, my go-to snow hat for the season: Thick and comforting 1930s Bodin-Marseilles/A. France 'Haute-Luxe' velour.



After picking up some Kryolan F/X Light Blood and breakaway theatrical whiskey bottles for our film work, Lydia and I took time to enjoy a nice meal at one of our favorite Nepalese restaurants in the Twin Cities: Gorkha Palace, Minneapolis.



We could not help ourselves but drop in for a visit at our usual architectural salvage haunts after lunch.

Picking up a few additional '30s dresses for our film wardrobe in the afternoon. The Sun made a fleeting but welcome appearance.

We arrived on location early Saturday morning for an intensive few hours of filming for the bar scene before the restaurant opened. 1940s Royal Hat Works.






Abundant sunshine mid-afternoon as we headed over to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds for the bi-annual Antiques Show and Militaria/Gun Shows.



A testament to the glory of American cast iron: Magnificent and monumental cast iron urn by J.W. Fiske & Co..



We only had an hour or so to spend at both shows as I still had to make the 150 mile drive north to Duluth by 7PM to attend a concert. We were only able to see everything, albeit with some haste, due to Friday's heavy snowfall, which saw the fairground racetrack infield covered by a blanket of snow rather than hundreds of enthusiastic dealers.



Arrived at Duluth's inner harbor and the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center by dusk, 15 minutes prior to the concert. The historic Aerial Lift Bridge presides majestically over the inner harbor, still covered in ice.



We trekked over 200 miles from home to find our "Harold". The brilliant violist Victoria Chiang just after her heroic performance of Hector Berlioz's 'Harold en Italie', a too-seldom performed masterpiece. Hearing it performed live by a great violist such as Victoria is worth a thousand mile drive! The Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra's wonderful account of Brahms' equally heroic 1st Symphony, under the baton of their current music director and Victoria's husband Markand Thakar made for a memorable evening.

Large snowflakes began to fall as I gazed out into the vast expanse of Lake Superior.



We had very little time to browse one of our favorite antiques shops before a 2PM concert called us back to St. Paul. A last photo in Duluth, of one of my favorite buildings in the city, now sadly boarded up and awaiting its next rebirth: The Orpheum Theater on 2nd Avenue East.



The snow had changed over to a cold rain as we made it back to St. Paul and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts with nary 10 minutes to spare before our 'audience' with the Princess Turandot.



Quite possibly my favorite work in the operatic literature, the Minnesota Opera's 50th Season Finale was an utterly spectacular production. Emotionally expansive and visually stunning, Giacomo Puccini's timeless music bringing tears to our eyes.



We had to conclude our weekend with Chinese food following 'Turandot', of course. Szechuan Spice, Minneapolis.

No hat again today when I wake up. Too windy. Tired of the wind. Most days anymore the winds are 15-20mph and up. Only a few of my hats have wind strings and I don't really like those hats. I'm Tired of always holding them down or walking with my head turned and still needing to have one hand on "stand by" waiting for a flying hat. This is really starting to get to me.
