Even though it will be warm this afternoon, I went with the classic Portis "the New Slant" from the mid to late 50s today. Meeting across campus, this should be a nice hat for the walk.

DOH!!!! I finally figured out why there is a hesitation right off falling deeply in love with this Akubra as I did my Stetson. For some reason, I don't like how it sits, it's not the crown, it is the same height in front and back as my Stetson, the brim is only an 1/8 difference, could be the color but I don't think so, so what could it be why the crown on the Akubra is making me look like I have an Abe Lincoln stovepipe on my head????? It's the grosgrain ribbon, the Akubra is wider than the Stetson which gives the impression that what is above the ribbon on the Stetson there is more material......that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Actually, a thinner ribbon makes the same height hat look bigger, in my eyes. More felt showing = taller looking hat.

It's kind of a toasted color, a medium brown with age I guess. Mine is old and some of the threads broke right at the snap brim when I first got it. The sweat was shot and the ribbon was one of those horrid crocheted things.

So I sent it off to Mike Miller and he got rid of the ribbon, replaced the sweat and re-sewed the broken threads at the front. He also sent me 3 pugs, one of which was acquired by my daughter for her Ben Affleck semi-calado.

My new Whippet. I brushed, cleaned, and steamed it, but the ribbon is discolored. I will have to replace it, I guess.

I now believe it's also the difference in the color with the hat being a lighter color than the ribbon. The ribbon on the Stetson blends into the hat color. "and that's the rest of the story" .

Back to school. Capturing the colors of this hat is a tough homework assignment. Think a hat to wear with scrubs.
