Tried to get out and back home before the 50 mph windstorm hit today. Just to be safe, I went aerodynamic with the Dunstatter Mystery Derby. I had the sweat replaced (old and crumbled stitching on a non-reed original) so it is an all purpose, wearable go-to derby.

They may not have been designed for windy circumstances, but it's a nice bonus. Good looking bowler, Mike.

One of my two best-fitting hats, the Mallory Eagle, paired with my new Aero A2. Just before going to the barber.

Finally found my 1st Vintage Borsalino. Surprisingly, I messaged the etsy seller with a price $90 lower than what was listed and they accepted it. Seems to be in excellent condition. Now just need to watch those "how to shape your borsalino" videos on youtube as the current bash is a bit crooked.

Well I purchased my first hat 2 weeks ago and it was a wool felt pork pie. I started reading about hats on this site and I became aware that fur felt and vintage are generally better quality hats. I saw a hat on an online buy and sell site. It was an hour and a half drive away but I decided to drive there. It seems that I take a 7 3/8 size and this one was listed as 7 1/2.

I arrived there a few mins ago and didn't even try it on before purchase. I just tried it on now for these pics.

It turns out to have a box it was sold in in the early 1950s. It is a biltmore Canada box but inside the box is a grey Stetson Whippet I believe.

Now my big question is how to clean it.

It needs a cleaning in the ribbon and the hat looks like it needs a little cleaning.

However inside that hat is really clean with no staining.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the lounge. Lovely first fur felt. There are several threads dealing with how to clean hats.

Flu day here under a Biltmore Manhattan

I pulled on some of my warmest clothes and I'm sitting here shivering. I think my upstairs neighbor, Influenza Dean, infected my on out weekly grocery trip.

Hope you are having a better day than I am,

Taking stage today at our local community theater. Wearing my beater, set building hat. A late 1950s Stephen L. Stetson, Olympic Quality. This is an interesting hat with features such as a Carter Sweat band (a buttoned in design). Had the ribbon replaced by Mike Miller of NW Hats, but otherwise a nice example. I call it a beater, but a vintage beater it is.

There should a discussion about what defines a "beater". That looks like a good a hat as any, Mike.

Welcome, Will. Looks like ya done good on your first vintage hat purchase. Looks great on you.

I haven't read in between your post and right here yet, but get yourself a horsehair hat brush. Pretty cheap online. Brush the hat counter-clockwise on top, and clockwise on the underbrim. Once you hat is cleaned in some of the ways already suggested, occasional brushings will keep them fresh looking.
