I purchased my first really vintage hat a few months ago and left the Akubra FED IV behind while on my trip to Australia....

Just arrived back to it and we went out for a walk today in the rain.

Boy, I like this hat! Even after wearing the 3X Stetson for the last few months, there’s still some special feeling I have for the FED IV.

Greetings Nathaniel:
It’s good to get home to old friends. The Fed is a good look on you. I’m sure the 3x weathered well.
Thanks so much for the heads up on the Peters. It is fabulous my friend.
Stay safe in your voyages. Bowen

1940s or so Game Bird.

The ad is earlier than the hat, but I dig it because it shows the incredible array of colors in which the Game Bird was available.

Have a colorful Saturday.

My 3X came in pristine white condition, absolutely beautiful even for a new hat let alone one that’s over a half-decade old. Now it’s got a dark stain from some runoff water during a sudden downpour and I’ve definitely learned to appreciate the adventure of a “beater”!
Hey Nathaniel:
Imho...sometimes pristine can be prissy, which is alright....but character is always cool. What was, gives better appreciation to what is. Just sayin...
Be well. Bowen

Never mind, Bowen, I found them on Westerns, Anyone. Man that’s a sweet hat! I’m glad you picked it up and we get to see more of it!

No one will be able to suggest that you do not belong. Bitchin' hat, Jack.

Have fun.
Matt, I think I fit in okay since I've served as president 3 times in the past. The group dates back over 85+ yrs to the early 1930's when it was an organization of Cattleman & cow thieves. No one knows but we wonder if it was a result of Frank Phillips' (Phillips Petroleum Co) annual Cow Thieves & Outlaws Reunion picnic that he started at his ranch in Bartlesville, OK in 1926.
Today it's an old west historical research group mostly.

That’s something along the lines of what I was thinking when I first started wearing the 3X, but each new mark it got was like claws down a blackboard! And boy does a white hat mark easy!

If they were easy to get I wouldn’t mind, but I can’t afford to make another 150 USD purchase so I’m gonna try to get the 3X cleaned as best I can and save it for more special occasions...

In the meantime, I have two new-to-me vintage orders waiting for me when I arrive home next week and I ordered them with this lessen in mind - they’re both black! o_O

Yes, and they were selling it for a song!

How’s the felt - is it as nice as I think it is?

What I especially love about the 3X is the smell - it smells like delicious, clean, raw earth!

Greetings Scottyrocks:
Ha, wondered what happened. I can tell you it’s a Dobbs Forty, way old, some of the best felt i felt. Ha. Color: i’ll show you but tan, copper ribbon. Talk to Tim, Alley Kat, he just made a clone of one for a friend. Is posted in that thread. Thanks for the interest. Be well. Bowen
Ps: color looks true here.

Pss: think i screwed it up too. Leaving well enough alone! B
Gorgeous hat, Bowen. Fantastic colours. And I find myself scanning the picture for the other hats. Looks like a super collection.

One I forgot to post yesterday. It was a two hat day. Bit of a neglected hat: Garibaldi (probably made by Cervo). I have given it a sharper pinch since yesterday (I think it needed that).

IMG_0503.JPG

The Garibaldi was outgunned, outmatched and out-everythinged by today's Barbisio. Provided by Daniele. Not a stormproof hat (it's a wee bit roomy), but soooo nice.

Always liked those nutria hats. When was that particular hat made? The boots are pretty slick too!

D, thank you very much. I'm terrible at putting a date on these things but most indicators seem to be 30's-40's. It came from the estate of this fellow, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucien_Wulsin_III, who apparently wore it while riding with the Ranchero Visitadores. Here's a pic carouselvic posted of him from a program provided to members and guests when on the ride. I believe it may be from the 1941 ride, though I may be wrong about that as well.

Greetings All:
In honor of our world traveling brother, Nathaniel Finley, and his pursuit of our vicarious travels, today it’s two for him.
The Peters Bros. Fifty, he gave me the heads up on and “Old Faithful”, a 3x Last Drop 3 cord “twin” to his.
Nathaniel, this is what yours will look like in a decade or two.
Be well. Bowen
