That superb Twenty looks and sounds a lot like my Royal Coachman that I, almost embarrassingly, got for 6 at a thrift.

Heading out the door on this chilly (26 degrees, cold for us) morning in an old friend. One of my early addiction hats, a Dobbs Twenty, which I paid $20 for on Ebay. Great felt, substantial, and moldable. On the way to stingy with a brim just a smidge over 2". I forgot how much I love this one.

I approve of your extravagance! Go all the way with a couple of bucks. Love the crown on this derby. Have a great end of the week Matt.

Thank you Mike.

Dork that I am, I went and checked and $2 in 1910 was worth what $50 is today.

Your Dobbs rocks and you certainly win the "What a value!" award. Assuming that the hat is from the mid-fifties or so, in today's $$, that thing would sell for about $180. So you saved $160.

LUCKY!

I'm sliding back in time with Matt this morning. Howard derby, also likely from the first decade or two of the Twentieth century

A little worse for the wear, but if I made it into my second century in the same condition I would count myself very lucky indeed.

Hope it's a fine winter day where you are,
Michael

I love it, Michael.

Old, high-crowned derbies are right about at the top of my most beloved hat list. And that one is BOMB! The crown looks like it goes on for miles.

What is its height?

Pfff, a $2 dollar hat. You pretentious big spender!!

Looks great, Matt. Got to get me a derby myself. @EstherWeis!!!!

I like those deep side dents. Very nice OR
That is a great color on a very nice hat
I woke thinking "Should I wear a $3 or $4 derby today?" But then I remembered and thought "No. gosh darn it, why be so extravagant when I can wear a great derby that cost but $2!"

So I go with the Regal derby from sometime in the first couple decades of the 20th century. The ad is from 1905.

A very happy Friday to all. View attachment 96997 View attachment 96998 View attachment 96999 View attachment 97000 View attachment 97001 View attachment 97002 View attachment 97003 View attachment 97004
What the country needs is a good $2 hat. Very good looking derby
Dude, I was able to undercut your Dobbs Fifteen yesterday with my new Mallory Ten, but I'm afraid I don't have any dollar hats! Nice doiby.

Today, inspired by a conversation over in "Ask a question..." I decided on a modern, Excellent Quality Stetson Stratoliner - a recent Hatco Outlet find. The color is Caribou.

I saw a hat that looks a lot like that just a couple of pages back. Very nice, both of you.

Sorry guys for not having posted for a most of this week. Been awfully busy with work and it has been a dark out dark in situation pretty much all week too. Scrolling through all the pages I've missed I've seen some amazing hats: well done everyone! (I sound like young mr. Grace now). Did manage to take a quick shot today only to find out it's blurry. Added some good ones to the fold I still need to take pictures of, but it doesn't look like weather will permit that this weekend. O well: Flechet Granit today.

Thanks Matt. You are looking pretty snazz in your derby today. The crown on this Howard seems to be right about at 5 1/2". It's maybe a 1/4" or so taller than my Stetson and Willner derbies from the same era. While I was out running errands today I had one older lady give the derby high praise, and then she went on and on about the whole outfit and how it was nice to see somebody that cared about how they looked. Ha ha. I was nearly blushing. (I kid). Then at a second stop the same thing happened with another more middle aged lady. I guess a derby must be a more approachable hat than a fedora.
