I'm wearing my old Stetson 3X in anticipation of receiving another old Stetson in the Post today.

The challenge of this hat is that it's truly difficult to reshape into something other than the stock bash and brim without taking it to a professional hatter to get it reblocked and reflanged (see Milan Strat thread for some examples). I've only used steam and lots of it. I've successfully expanded the side dents a few times, but within a week, it's back to its original shape. I've given up on that.

The brim is more workable than the crown. Regarding the brim (those purists with real hat shaping tools may want to turn their eyes at this point), dust off those old Encyclopedia Britannicas. Four to be exact. I steamed the heck out of the brim and flattened it all the way around by laying the heavy books on each side overnight. That was actually pretty successful. But again, over time, it reverts back to its original shape. Every time I do it though, it lasts longer.

Another thing that works is to stretch the brim. The Milan gives. Steaming and gently stretching helps the brim to do what you want it to do. Besides, the brim was quite short on mine. Stretching got it to the 2 1/2" it's supposed to be.

I finally decided I like this hat best with a slight "brim up" look with the front close to flat. That's pretty easy to achieve.

To others considering the Milan Strat, buy it only if you like the stock look or are willing to get it professionally reworked.

Thanks for the tips. I'll get to work!

Charlie, for some reason we seem to have a couple of those big jugs of NH maple syrup here with us. I think we'll be ok for a while at least :)

David, glad to see you are acclimating nicely.

I have on an old Stetson nutria... not real clear whether it is real or clear as the markings say both. It does have the Stetson tailored edge. c.1940

Simply sublime, Alan. Tailored edge? Why so many layers today? Will it be cold here tomorrow?

FrunoB that old Stetson is now my favorite hat of your collection. GREAT, classic profile/proportions!

David, please don't tell Joao, but I'm really liking your black BSHW western more and more! :gossip:

Sam you always exude confidence under your beret. Great look!

HatDandy, Dude, the cocoa VS looks completely delicious! MMMmmm!

Mr. Durand, my friend! Your moonstone CD (yesterday) is an amazing lid. And I thank you for your kind comments over the last couple of days!!

Daniele your Borsa Piuma looks very nice and light, and what a tiny welted edge! Exquisite!!

Raider your Peters Bros (yesterday) is as perfect a lid as one could ask for... color, proportion, style, EVERYTHING, man!!

Mantis you have splashed onto the scene with aplomb (and with a fantastic Goorin!) Super lid, lad!! Best of luck with your written project.

Back to the 7XCB today. Taking advantage of it's clay-like moldability trying a different bash. I think I like this better than the Cattleman crease. Could be my fedora-centric bias

Echoing what Charlie said. No hats for me today, home with some kind of nasty virus, maybe the dog flu?
Anyway, all great hats, and David, you're wearing those westerns like a natural.
Tommy, I do like that bash.
