Hi BJ. The brim is 2 1/4. I have come to prefer wider brims in the last couple of years, but I still like the style of this hat. By the way, I like the look of your Dobbs. Is that a newer model or vintage?

Thanks for the info sir; the proportions look good on you. I think I’m going to have to try a 2 1/4 when I get around to ordering a custom. It adds to the verticality without taking too much away from the brim.

The Dobbs is modern, their Capri model or something similar. I replaced the original ribbon with one off an old Biltmore that died in surgery.

Nature Valley Grand Prix 2011

With the Tour de France only days away, I thought it appropriate to post some photos from the 2011 Nature Valley Grand Prix, a multi-day stage race we look forward to attending each year. Unfortunately, due to having to send Ryan off to music camp this year, we were only able to attend Stage 4 of the race, the Uptown Minneapolis Criterium.

The women's race was sadly marred by a devastating crash that took out most of the peloton on the penultimate lap of the race. The race was nullified. Overall leader and yellow jersey Kristin Armstrong limps back to the start/finish line with some assistance following the crash. Kristin was the 2008 Olympic champion in the road race.

The crash also took out the New Zealand national team. The Kiwi ladies thankfully sustained only superficial injuries. Four other riders were taken via ambulance to hospital with broken collar bones and significant lacerations.

Men's yellow jersey and former Giro d'Italia stage winner Robert Forster pedals along with participants in the kids' race.

The men begin to form up near the start/finish line. I am wearing my Stetson Breakers tipped back on my head in order to take pictures.

Riders in a lighter moment just prior to the start of the race.

The officials have called the riders to the line.

The honorary starter of the race and fellow Minnesotan: Greg LeMond. Two years my senior, we both raced as Juniors in US Cycling Federation road races in the late '70s and early '80s, in California and Nevada. Greg, of course, would go on to become World Champion and three time winner of the Tour de France. Before he fired the starter's pistol, Greg said that he really missed being out there in the thick of the action, but did not miss the crashes. It was a sentiment I shared completely.

Typical of criteriums, the attacks came quickly. This was an early breakaway.

A valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to launch a solo break.

The well oiled United Health Care train setting tempo in the peloton and reeling in the breakaway.

It was past nine in the evening by race end, and we hurried over to one of our old favorites, Luci Ancora. The restaurant had cleared out by then, and so we enjoyed a leisurely, private supper.

Ivory Salmon, served with oyster mushrooms in a truffle sauce. A wonderful way to end the evening.

Akubra Capricorn on my current trip to India. Trying out the Capricorn for the first time on this trip. Needed a good warm weather hat that would not be beat up by monsoon rains (like my nice Panama would be) and was cheap if I lost it. Its meeting the bill rather well, but I do find a plastic hat even with ventilation is not as cool as straw/panama... But nothing is perfect. Over all I like the hat.
