Not really. I just made a measured response based on my limited understanding of an instrument that you obviously have a commanding knowledge of. Not to mention my lack of a relationship with either musician other than listening to both since the early 70's. As usual, cops write bullet points and lawyers write briefs. I'll slink back to my corner and strum open chords on my Guild DV-6.
If you want to play slide guitar, the open tunings are the way to go. They have many technical advantages over standard tuning. The most prevalent is that an open tuning provides a major chord across all six strings, so holding the slide straight across at any fret yields a chord on any set of strings.

Open E is perhaps the tuning of choice. It is close to standard tuning because the top two strings are tuned the same. This works well for many blues slide licks because they require only slight movement of a couple of frets above or below to play an entire passage. Elmore James and Duane Allman* played in open E.

If you will play in an open tuning, I have an empty Coricidin bottle I will give you.

Remember, the only truth in life is how far you can bend that third string.

*My favorite slide guitarist of all time. I know, I know, he copied Jesse Edwin Davis ("I just play the notes that sound good") note for note on several of those classics (Statesboro Blues is one). Put Taj Mahal in that category as well. BTW it was Jesse Edwin Davis who played the great slide parts on that Fabulous Ry Cooder album and not Ry Cooder, who was a decent slide player himself. One day I will tell the story of how I met Duane (and Greg) and became friends with Duane back before they hit it big. It has been 37 years and 8 days and I still think of him daily.

Edit Note: I said it had been 37 years and 8 days. I was only a decade off. It has been 47 years. Sorry Duane. Your memory lives on.
