Now playing, it's the 2/13/37 broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera production of "Manon," featuring the American debut of Brazilian soprano Bidu Sayao -- who used to live just a few miles up the road from here, in a house with a sign out front reading "Casa Bidu." I drove by there often, thinking "Gee, that's the same name as that opera singer. Can't be too many of those." But because we don't believe in pestering celebrities around here, I didn't find out it was actually her until she'd passed away.
