Here in Southern California even in the warmest of weather you see guys wearing hoodies

as some sort of fashion statement that seems to include a weird passive aggressive vibe. They wear the hoodie up so they can't see to the sides like some kind of blinders for horses. It says don't engage with me don't even look at me. At the same time a distinct portion also use their body language to effect a sense or aura of menacing or intimidation. i saw the film Max Payne and the 3 guys in the subway seem to be the culmination of the fashion statements of the great unwashed, hoodies included.

Then this explains why some people have to be permanently hooded.

Yes! There it is, the defining term that I've been looking for "The Great Unwashed"!! Very clever John, a perfect description of that part of our culture that wallows in rags and slovenly appearance. I've got a hoodie and a leather jacket...never worn together! But then again, I don't wear pajama bottoms and flip flops to the grocery store or mall.

It's an old term if you look in Wiki it directs you to hoi polloi but I don't have the time to read all that. I am surprise that it hasn't been attacked as hate speech yet.

Gee never thought this thread would go to 5 pages.

Would never wear one of those cheapo pleather cafe-racer type jackets w/ an integrated hood. Wouldn't wear anything made out of pleather for that matter.

Now layering a cotton hoodie under a cafe jacket is another story. For me it's very practical especially in wet or cold weather.

Having been a motorcycle rider for 30+ years, I have found nothing better for fall and spring than a hooded sweatshirt under a good leather jacket. Old habits die hard, and its still a standard for me, whether on a bike or not.

As for the leather jackets with the attached hoods, the ones I have tried on were cheaply made and ill-fitting, so I wouldnt have purchased one of them even if it didnt have a hood.

I like the idea of layers of clothing remaining separate, anyway.

So you wear the helmet over the hood ?

Sometimes I wear a hoodie under my leather jacket. It's warm and comfortable. I don't usually wear the hood because I usually have a hat on. I don't see anything wrong with it.

One more shot fired in the never ending battle of practicality vs. fashion: Smartwool has axed all hoodies for men, leaving only 2 women's models in the lineup.

L.L.Bean still has this merino wool job in od and black. Not very working class looking, but I'll bet it's warm. At $119, it better be.

Maybe thats how its done in Jersey, but no, the hood acts like a large collar and keeps the back of the neck warm while riding, and seals up any space that would allow drafts down a rider's back. December through February/mid-March, I add a balaclava.

No we don't actually, we donate all of our hoodies to people in Long Island. We have collection bins at gas stations just for hoodies. The only hoodies seen in Jersey are actually worn by NY'ers in Seaside.
