Cavanagh 55, 1960s

I think I posted a picture of myself wearing this once.
It's hard to capture what is so exceptional about this hat.
I bought it on a lark- I was trying to talk Brad Bowers into
buying it because it was a very unusual Cavanagh. But when
he didn't bid, I did. I got it for less than its original price.
It's a 7 3/8 and marked Regular Oval, which I didn't expect to fit
my 7 1/2 LO head, but for some reason it does fit, comfortably
if snugly.

The hat is quite stiff and extremely light.

Sorry, you can't see the horseshoe pin and much of the
rainbow feather (okay, maybe it's fine not to see that) but
check out the lines:

Apologies if this is slow to load, but you have to see the large
version of this. A most unusual bevelled edge:

I bet you didn't believe it was a Cavanagh:

Let's start with the unusual "cattleman" block, via Milan, I guess...

Uh, how many of your western lids have wind trolleys?

Note the unreeded sweat and the classic Borsalino corrugated
sweat protector in the front of the sweatband:

I can't say I wear it much- it's quite heavy and more than a bit odd.
Funny, isn't it, how it has such a rough pounce and such refined,
dress hat-style features?

I'm guessing 60s or 70s for this hat. Got a better guess?

I have been around a LOT of western hats but I have never seen or heard of a Cav western.

Lefty, the book Men's Hats has Borsalino western cowboy
style hat examples from 1920, 1947, and 1950. No sign of
wind trolleys! They certainly knew the market but something
odd seems to have happened when mine was made. I expect
they hadn't made a lot of western hats since the 50s.

Suitedcboy, I also have a perhaps 50s Open Road/Stratoliner style
western Cavanagh (pictures posted a few years back) and a 60s
Cavanagh 100 "Denver" which started life as a Open Road-style hat
but I had it converted to a snazzy fedora by Art Fawcett (the OR
block from that period was not at all appealing to me). I guess I
should post that one in the "conversions" thread some day. So
they did do western hats, but I've never seen another straight
up cowboy hat from Cavanagh. It's a tremendously well made hat
and wonderfully light.

My re-ribboned go-to hat, a 7x clear beaver stetson started life as a cattleman creased, thin ribboned hat. It has a mode edge.

I have a Borsalino that had an Alpine crease. It retailed at Nathan's Men's Wear Ponca City Okla. No wind trolley.

It was around 12 years old and Mike Moore redid it into a 'Pale Rider' style.

Yes, it's chewed up, but what a hat!

Inside of the hat. Green liner. Textured sweatband. Appears it might have had a stampede string at some point.
