I have found a felt hat to be bearable in hot weather, if it is a light color (Dark colors, like black, absorb heat. Light colors reflect heat; just like we learned in science class). Whichever you wear on a hot day, felt or straw, your head will sweat and your hair will get wet. No hat will keep that from happening. It's just a matter of what you find comfortable enough to bear. (Wearing no hat raises another set of problems.)

I agree about color. The best thing I have found for the hot summer days here are some of the cheaper mesh side hats. I have a couple of fabric mesh jobs from Tractor Supply, and an outbackish leather/mesh from Minnokotka(sp). When I walk they seem to intensify a feeling of a breeze across the top of my balding head. The Tilley's do not seem quite as cool but are easier to wash, keep looking good.

My father-in-law wears one of those Tilly contraption in the heat and has to keep taking it off cause it's so hot, while I leave my Peters Bros. on in the heat. It's a heavier felt so I know I will wear my VS hats this summer.:)

I just picked thgis up....

It's an Akubra "Airstream". You can call it Vintage I guess....1960's
I never seen one before, it has these cool perforated air holes all around the Crown, just above the knitted ribbon. I'm hoping this will work for me as an all around spring/summer hat. This is my 1st Akubra.
these are after a good steaming and cleaning, I changed the crease as well and took the fish lure feather out....:eusa_doh:

I'd also like to put my 2 cents in for Sunbody hats. I have one I wear outside and if it gets rained on it very easily can be put back into shape. I've reshaped the crown and changed the brim several times just by holding it under running water and letting it air dry.

Nice light Stratoliner or Borsalino...

For the UK these are light enough for our summers, plus I think the thin ribbon gives a summery edge to them.

Jaxon hat

DrQuest

I picked up that Jaxon hat a couple weeks ago. Couldn't resist the price at $20 and even picked up second Jaxon straw Outback type with a Kangaroo pin on the leather band at $12. The $20 one was a Large and the $12 one was an XL. The fitting could be better, but at the price I couldn't expect too much. If I get more than one years wear out of these two hats I'll be happy.

I have it on my list to purchase within the next few days. Can you recommend it? One year's wear doesnt sound like it's worth it.

Expectations?

I tend to sweat big time, so I may trash hats sooner than most. That's why I don't expect too much out of this hat. I'm also somewhat clumsy at times and can be hard on hats. I bought this as a kick around hat as opposed to a "dressing up" hat. At $20 I don't worry about it getting damaged, but I try to take care of it a bit.

My first nice straw was a Stetson City (shantung) that I paid $65 for and lasted about 2 years before becoming stained on the crown (from grabbing) and totally sweated through on the brim (front and rear). It's been replaced by the Stetson Charlton (same hat, wider ribbon) at $85 as my Dressy Straw. This was before I knew what shantung was. Now I want real straw, not paper. The Jaxon filled the bill until I can step up dollar wise. I think it's a good deal even though it's Chinese and has a cloth sweatband.

Just my opinion for what it's worth.

Stingies are less than functional. IMO the stingy brim late 50's and early 60's killed hats. JFK had nuthin to do with it.
Uh oh you better start running, I can hear the "stingies" coming after that shot across the bow!lol lol lol
