I am not proclaiming myself as a Panama expert, but, as a native born and raised Central Floridian, I do humbly fancy myself a storm and rain expert

And most definitely YES ... Too much water will cause Panamas to lose their shape. In fact, even if you keep out of the rain, those after-the-rain steaming sidewalks can cause enough moisture to sag the brim shape.

I have heard/read there are ways to seal them up a bit to help, but I don't recall what they are.

After having a few weeks of experience wearing my light weight hat from VS I have to recommend it for warm weather. It hasn't gotten "Georgia hot" here yet... but on the warmest days so far I've forgotten I was wearing a hat until I see my reflection in something.
