USN Deck Jackets period / repop

It feels like a predominantly wool blend (there are certainly some synthetic fibres in there too). It's much more comfortable than the alpaca lining (not at all scratchy) with quilted lining to sleeves and storm cuffs.
Yes, every bit as heavy weight as an issued N-1 (I had a larger 48 a few years ago) and very warm.

I really dig all of these USN inclement weather jackets. I love my navy front zip deck jacket. I much prefer it over the tankers I've owned, even though the style is similar. My Peacoat is great and what a classic it is. However, my warmest USN jacket is the N-1, by far. The A-2 permeable jacket comes in 2nd in the warmth department, as far as the USN jackets I own go.

EDIT: I forgot the I also own the Buzz Rickson's faithful repro of the US Navy Transport Coat from the 1930's. It's actually my warmest and nicest USN jacket/coat, by far.

With that endorsement, I may be shopping for an N-1. If it is warmer than your A-2, I can't go wrong as my A-2 is one of my warmer and more comfortable jackets. I usually wear it when sitting on the deck in the winter sun smoking a cigar. Also will look into the Buzz Rickson Transport Coat.

When the temps drop into the lower 30s and 20s, I find my peacoats need the help of a sweater to reduce the transfer of air and to add a bit of insulation. When I was younger and spending time in the City, I think the typical daytime highs were in the upper 20s and the typical lows in the teens. All I needed then was a closely fitted peacoat and I stayed warm. I don't remember wearing a sweater, but we were doing a lot of walking which generated plenty of heat.

Ian, Don't underestimate the temps we get here in Mid-Tenn. This morning when I was out and about, it was 14 degrees. Yesterday when I was out at noon, the car thermometer (it is accurate) showed 17 degrees, then warmed to 19 degrees by the time I got back home an hour or two later. Now we won't have a whole winter of this as you guys do, but it does get plenty cold during the winter. The good thing is it doesn't last very long. This cold period will hang in for about 5 or 6 days, and then warm to more seasonal temps. Last year I don't think we got below zero. I believe the lowest temp in Mid-Tenn was one or two above. So, when the cold weather is here, we have to be ready for i; thus, my interest in all things warm.

Inspired by this thread some time ago before it popped up again, I finally found a 44" and I bought it. I had to do a bit of darning, bind the cuffs and replace the zipper (the Talon was shot and so I fitted a brass Conmar).

V. Poor photo of me at the track yesterday, sporting my deck jacket. It wasn't really cold enough. Our local velodrome is housed in a 1918 seaplane hanger at Calshot Spit. I thought it an appropriate setting!

Random deck jacket search on ebay last night pulled this with 12 minutes left to run. I've been after one fo these for well over ten years now, but put it in the pipe dream file, as originals seem as rare as hens teeth, and the repro prices were well out of my league.
Anyway, this Pike Bros example was still within my grasp financially, and it was (hopefully) my small size too. Too good to be true? I made a cheaky bid with 20 seconds to go, and walked away assuming it would not be enough, or I'd get sniped. Anyway lady fortune smiled on me for a change and I won it for £51, which I think is a steal. (I was contimplating getting a early model tanker repro and dying it ...)
So now I am looking into stenciling options, as this jacket definitely needs U.S. NAVY on the back. And advice out there for doing this?

I own this USN navy zip front deck jacket from Pike. It's well made and I love it. The only issue I had it that the sleeves are quite long. So, I had to have them shortened. In saying that, it fits very well through the torso. Overall, it's very well made and well worth what you paid for it. The inner pocket also comes in quite handy for a phone or wallet.

Good to know. I've replaces a few knit cuffs on jackets before now so hopefully I can make this one fit, if it doesn't!
