USN Deck Jackets period / repop

Big fan of the Richard Stark Parker novels and I think Lee Marvin was about perfect for the character in this.

Its been a few years since I've seen it and I thought from these photos it must've been during the flashbacks of the robbery scenes as I know they are brief - But I found that on the TCM Movies website here.

And he isn't wearing it there. Then I found this on youtube and it looks like it was just worn during rehearsals/set ups. Now I look you can actually see the jacket worn in the film scenes under this one in the first photo.

Wow, what a great promo short! A lot of insight, neat jackets (Marvin's N-1 has stenciling on the back which I've seen before) and Angie Dickinson!

I picked up one of these current-issue flame resistant Navy deck jackets off eBay for $30; jacket is warm, comfortable and has some excellent workmanship. I highly recommend grabbing one if you find one in your size.

^ I was looking for one of those last year but never found one. The collar looks like it would be a hundred times more useful than the tiny collar on the CWU 45P jackets, plus the black(?) would be more wearable in daily life. Envious!

It’s a dark navy blue @Doctor Damage and the design is very functional; the side handwarmer pockets have hidden zippers for added security and there are two large inner pockets. Heavy duty front zipper with Velcro wind flap which zips all the way up to the top of the high collar.
The fabric is heavyweight and feels almost like Carhardt cotton/canvas.
There are afew of these for sale on the ‘Bay right now. The prices seem to range all over the place, from $29.99 up to over $100. Keep looking, you’ll find one! Good luck!

Oh that sounds great, much more practical than the CWU stuff, or anything else that isn't combat gear. I've got too much stuff right now, but maybe I'll keep an eye out for one. Thanks. It must be quite a useful jacket for you in your job.

That's awesome! It looks like that may have been his personal jacket. Those markings are Marine Corps UNIS markings from WWII. The half circle was used by the 4th Marine Division, which Marine served in.

Here is my foul weather jacket from the Vietnam War. The USN stencil on the left front and the ship's name stencil across the back have nearly faded out. I lived in this jacket for a good part of the year at sea.

It wasn't much good for extended use in heavy rain, other rainproof clothing was necessary when out in the open during rain storms. It soaked up water, became heavy and took forever to dry out.

It was sufficiently warm for most of the mid and northern Pacific latitudes during most of the year but not, for example, for the Bering Sea in winter. The shell was durable, the knit cuffs kept out drafts and the tabs at the bottom allowed it to be snugged up against the wearer's hips.

It was probably the most popular utility jacket of the time although foul weather jackets were not general uniform issue items....that means they were intended only for personnel with duties that required their wear.

Just an update: I performed a little “sleeve-ectomy” surgery on the cuffs of my Navy deck jacket. I never liked the inset sleeve with inner storm cuff design. It looks great on an N-1 but I felt that with the elastic waistband design of this jacket, the cuffs should match (much like a G-1 or B-15 flight jacket). It took a little work but I’m MUCH happier with the exposed cuffs, and it added about 2 inches to the total sleeve length (perfect for someone like me with long arms).

...And here is the standard-issue Navy flame resistant deck jacket on the job (“in action”), a couple of years ago when I was on active duty. I’m really liking this jacket as a daily-wear work jacket!
