You are missing the brim support inside. Without one, the hat tip ( when rested upside down ) can rub on the base and eventually casue wear or damage.

Well I'm aware it's missing the brim support but the brim of my other top hat is big enough so the sides are supporting but I guess it isn't good for long term. Could I buy some soft packing foam and cover it with velvet and make a brim support on my own? Sure it may not look as good as the one in the pictures but it's still better than nothing, right?

Al depends on how you secure it, note the elasticated tags in the new one, it is not just support by brim below but also support ontop above so when it case is tipped upside down during transport hat remains secure. The design acts so that the hat band and /or the brim edges to they would get touched first if there were any movement.

My bucket haves also the elastic bands even though they aren't elastic any more. Then again I don't have to transport the hat anywhere unless taking it out counts. The reason why I bought the bucket was that I have wanted a real leather bucket for a while and now I happened to find one for a good price and a one with key. They aren't that common any more. There was another one in the shop but that had the brim support but no key and it was more expensive.

I'll go and buy some saddle soap and clean it and then maybe give it some leather oil ( http://www.ekol.se/index.php/en/leather-care.html ). Then I'll see how easy it is to find some foam. This is starting to sound taking things a bit far, up until now my topper has been upside-down in a hat box with no brim support or whatsoever and it has been good. Then again I the box has stood pretty still so no moving.

Ok this time it's a new toppy!

Height 14,5cm on the front.

I just painted over the name in a photo editor program.

Me in my new top hat, a bit bad quality but It's the best picture I like.

PS: And My top hat bucket is doing much better now after I washed it with saddle soap and gave it some leather oil.

Thanks! I am happy over having them because of my head size of 58cm (7 1/8 UK, 7 1/4 US) it can be hard to find silk top hats in my size. The tallest of them I have found from a second hand shop and the two others are from private persons.

Haven't been checking this page for months now.

I have to advise people not to use the water polishing method any more. I know my blog post about it (which I have been meaning to amend and re-write for ages but never get round to it through procrastination! In fact, I might just delete it as it maybe considered misinformation to the public) recommends this method but it isn't good for the plush as highlighted, it dries the plush out and water itself isn't good for silk.

I saw this today while hitting some antique malls today. I remember reading about the construction material of these hats going from beaver to silk and was wondering if anyone thought this might be beaver and if the price is correct. (I am not in the market just curious). I have been seeing this topper for some time but it was locked inside of a display case and today the case was open so I took the opportunity to snap some shots of it. Condition is OK. I have seen much nicer top hats in this thread.

It is not beaver, it's silk plush. 'Beaver hat' held on in American jargon strongly enough that it's a common error now. Personally, with that amount of wear around the crown and brim, I wouldn't pay $300 for it. You can find toppers in much better condition for a similar price if you're patient.

They want $300 for it. The liner is very fragile and slightly tattered, no sweat our size markings and the felt was worn aground the edges. Very interesting looking piece though

Yeah, I wouldn't go $300. There are some nice quality ones on the 'bay for less from time to time. Neat find though! I wish I could come across something like that on my hunts!
