One from last weeks local car boot sale, I spied this cravat in a box just as I was leaving, it cost a whole 'ten bob' ( fifty pence)'
I don't think it was ever worn although it has been stored badly at some point and has one tiny hole and a few very light mould spots? just on one end;

you can just see the damage below though the bright suinlight made all photos yesterday look a little washed out!

It's not quite as bright as it looks Eddie more of a pea green or corporation green!

I came across this really odd cravat today while having a lunch-time browse around a junk/vintage shop. A 'Tootal Ascot', which is basically a cravat without having to tie it. At first I thought someone had modified a normal cravat, but on seeing the label, inspecting the stitching, and that the front itself is not the normal shape for a Tootal cravat, I can only assume it was a very short-lived run of cravats. For my money I would assume it was for the North American market (going by the use of the term 'Ascot') but i don't know for sure. It's definitely rayon, and has a Velcro strap that goes around the neck, and then you flip the pleated front over and it looks like a perfectly tied cravat. Let me know what you reckon gents - I can't remember there being one already on this thread? But I might be wrong.

I'm assuming late 1950s? Velcro I think wasn't in civilian use until 1955 I think, and Tootal switched to Polyester in the early 1960s?

That's a new one. Blimey - what an odd find! Never heard of it and never seen one before. Just a bit jealous - but you knew I would be!

These Velcro tie cravats / ascots are not unusual in USA and Europe. Beauties company in USA sells them (and will make one of your cloth design choice). No, they don't slip but I prefer regular types.

Interesting. I've seen them for the modern wedding cravats but never for normal ones. It doesn't take an awful lot to just tie a knot! But as you say Esteban68, keeps it in place and it does look nice and symmetrical.

This must be the very latest incarnation of a 'Black Quality'. It seems very much like a woven pattern though, and as far as I know all the rayon ties other than 'Green' were printed?

My latest: A 'Standard Quality', usual label. The colour is much more vibrant than the scanner has picked up, and it has nearly undetectable dark spots in the pattern too.



I saw some Tootal scarves the other day and didn't get them - I wish I had now! One was a deep blue angular paisley. They haunt my dreams!

Eddie, are you referring to the dark blue geometric interpretation of paisley? If so, it would have been difficult to resist. That is one of the nicest scarves they ever made. Out of interest, how much was it?

Also, the ebay tie doesn't look like any other black quality tiw I have seen. Woven pattern and untipped. I guess it was a later version?

Refusing the scarf was difficult, although it wasn't in the *best* condition - starting to rub away, sort of thing. It was £14. I was also tempted by a gold and silver Paisley, and a Red and Blue Medallion one, at similar prices. It's a place where the Tootals (and most ties and scarves) don't sell that fast - the last few times I've been in, there's a red paisley 'Special Quality' on a tie rack for £10. It's just a bit of a stretch for me when you can get them cheaper elsewhere if you're patient and diligent.

And yes, that Ebay tie is very peculiar - almost seems untrue. It looks like someone got a 1960s Terylene tie and sewed the Tootal label on it! I'm not dead bothered about it if you want to snap it up for the sake of collection.

Acquired this little fellow today. I think I've already seen one on this thread somewhere?

Tootal 'Green Quality' yellow tie with horse-head motif. Pretty fun, although I have nothing to do with horses, and I paid too much money for it. But I couldn't pass it up when I saw it! It's in pretty immaculate condition, considering its so bright!




Odd design for a 'Green Quality' I'd say.
