We are agog to see jackets made from these hides. I note that Aero HQ is also advertising new hides, but not these. SJ

Italian Hides are over the Atlantic right now on their way to Aero... We (Insurrection and Thurston) sourced these hides and we're sending them to Aero to have jackets made for our customers... We took a Russet shot and some Seal shots while we packed up the hides...they sure look good!

I've paraphrased the text below from a good article on Veg.-tanned leathers...in our opinion the rain isn't a problem for someone interested in a veg.-tanned jacket....
.... While the rain and sun may change the appearance of your jacket, it will not damage the leather if treated properly. In fact, it is the aging properties of vegetable tanned leather that makes it so special and produces a jacket that will never be repeated.

Question:
Hi Carrie - may I ask what you mean with "treated properly" - none of my CX FQHH need a treatment.
BTW: Thanks for your effort to share those amazing pics !!! Just WOW
Thanks
WW

Hi WW,

Leathers like CXL or Vanson's Comp. Weight are treated in the tanning process to be fairly water resistant for a long time, but even they eventually need a replenishing of this protection (through a leather lotion or other treatment) to make sure the leather stays strong for the long haul. This veg tanned leather doesn't have this same water resistance, but as long as a little bit of moisture restoration occurs after a lot of exposure to rain and/or sun, then the leather will remain in excellent shape for a lifetime (and more!).

Thanks Carrie for the explanation - those leather pics are reeeal eyecandy!!
Next I have to start a business projekt in Eurpoe - so my question is, if I order a jacket in this hide, you send the hide to AERO to make the jacket, right?
And after the jacket is ready to ship, will AERO ship the final result back to you in the US, or can I receive the jacket at my adress in Europe?
Custom duties are a plague :eeek:

Thanks
WW

Hi WW,

It won't be any problem to include your Europe address with the order and have Aero ship it directly to you...that will save everyone time and money!

Good name Carrie.
I lived in Vicenza as a foreign exchange student years ago.
It is an amazing city with beautiful architecture and scenery.
Just as a clarification though...Vicenza is in Veneto.(between Verona and Padova) ;-)

Although tanned in Tuscany, we've decided to call our leather Vicenza...(we really liked the name...has a good feel to it)

Here is some more information on our Italian Veg.-Tanned Full Grain Vicenza Horsehide.

Information via our Italian contact:

Vegetable tanning

Vegetable tanning is the transformation from raw hides into a material that will resist throughout time and is a process that slowly happens in wooden drums, in full respect of man and the environment. Vegetable tanning is an astonishing process based on the use of natural tannins extracted from chestnut or Argentinean quebracho trees and, mainly, on the slow passing of time... all the time necessary. Nearly forty days are actually needed to transform raw hides into unique vegetable-tanned leathers.

Among the various tanning methods, vegetable tanning is classic, traditional, recognizable, and able to give leather unique characteristics. It is able to join comfort and look, fashion and tradition, uniqueness and versatility of the product. For all these reasons, vegetable tanning belongs both to the past and to the future.

Vegetable tanning is based on the use of tannin, an active ingredient responsible for the transformation of the animal hide into a compact and resistant material that is durable through the years, properly called cuoio (vegetable-tanned leather). This natural substance can be found in many different trees and vegetables, in variable concentration according to the different species. It is sometimes contained in the bark, other times in the leaves, in the wood or in the fruits as well as in the roots. These natural tannin extracts (namely chestnut- and quebracho tree-) make the vegetable-tanned leather unique and immediately recognisable and easily distinguishable from leather tanned with other methods: also the scent of vegetable-tanned leather is something amazing...

The modern tanning industry uses tannin extracts in liquid form or in powders. The most common and antique of them is the quebracho tree extract, a tree indigenous of Argentina. From its bark a characteristically red-coloured powder can be obtained that gives the leather an unmistakable warm and brilliant shade together with a compact texture more resistant against water and atmospheric agents.

Vegetable-tanned leather absorbs the traces of our living, it becomes older without ruining. Natural ageing does not compromise its resistance and gives it a vintage look with warm colour shades, showing evidence of being a natural product. No leather looks like any other...
