Hi all, just wondering what experiences people have had with the the horsehide, cowhide and buffalo from Thedi Leathers? Thinking of having a shawl collar jacket made up.

I have one in Horsehide. I love the cut: more like a cafe racer less boxy than some.
Here is a link to mine:

I love the type of Horsehide Theo uses in that it feels durable, yet not stiff like some others. It is not armor-like or crispy. The downside is that it hasn't shown much character evolution in the last couple of years, and it still feels a bit "fancy."
The aged cognac buffalo is amazing IMHO:

Also the black cowhide:

I believe these other options would be better suited for this style as I want this kind of jacket to look like it's seen a world of adventure. A grab-and-go style. Good luck! Also, note that they run small. Mine is a medium, and it fits as a 38-40.

I have a Thedi cross zip on the way in buffalo and my fit jacket from Thurston Brothers was a buffalo shawl collar. I really like look and feel of Thedi buffalo. It was a little thicker than the horsehide jackets I own, but with some of the supple flex I associate with goatskin. This gave the jacket a nice drape and comfortable feel right out of the box.
I agree with handymike that Thedi sizing runs a little small compared to my other jackets. I ended up ordering an xxl while I am normally somewhere between l and xl in other brands.

I don't have a 10th the experience or points of reference of hm or em but i do have the Thedi shawl in steer and like it very much. Initially i thought it would take years to break in but after 3 weeks it felt really great. I tend to buy size small shirts and a stock small fit well enough that i use it's measurements when considering other purchases.

I have three Thedi jackets, all purchased new in 2017, direct from Theodoros, made to my measurements. I've posted threads about them in the Outerwear forum; TL;DR they are all outstanding. Theodoros is great to work with.

Thanks everyone for the interesting insights. Handymike and bdf70, it was indeed your jackets that introduced me to the thedi shawl, it's a cracking jacket. Other jackets in this style seem to be a boxier cut that I don't think would work well on my skinny frame. bdf70, can I ask your height weight? Just wondering if the stock jacket at thurston in size small might fit me too.

El marro, thanks for your comments on the buffalo, this is I think is what I'm leaning towards, I want something substantial but that doesn't have quite so long a break in as fqhh. I assume that, being veg tanned, it patinas nicely and agree with handymike that this style looks best with a bit of wear to it - although the horsehide does sound like it's a winner if you have more patience! Theodoros has told me that the horse he uses is first chrome tanned and then veg tanned which might explain the slower evolution of patina compared to straight up veg tanned horse. Guppy, the cognac buffalo looks fantastic, has wearing the jacket added to the patina or is it too early to tell? I don't know whether to play it a bit safe and get the espresso or all out with aged cognac. Decisions.

I owned a Thedi CR, the phenix model. The HH was very nice. Substantial yet soft to the touch. The jacket was sewn with absolute laser beam accuracy. Perfect by any means of measure.

Same here, the black HH on my (now ex) phenix was REALLY nice, I would love to get another thedi at some point.
