Awesome! The Speedy is still probably my favorite watch of all time. I got one on my birthday in the year 2000 and it has been bulletproof over the years. Such an incredible watch. The FOIS is a beauty!
Thanks man, and I have to agree about the Speedmaster as it is also my all time favorite watch-model(timeless design with all the history to go with it, what's not to love?) :D

So for me the choice of first "higher end watch" was super easy, though it took a good while to chose between the FOIS and the Professional, but in the end as I'm a sucker for vintage designs the FOIS drew the longer straw haha(would love to own a Pro hesalite sandwich to go with it, but that'll have to wait :D ).

Still get that warm feeling each time I put it on my wrist :D

Cheers!

I have the solid back Professional with hesalite crystal. I love the warmth of the hesalite. Back when I bought mine, there was only the hesalite version and the sapphire sandwich version. Seems like an eternity ago. You made a great selection! I love the uncluttered dial on the FOIS.

Switched to this vintage inspired Hamilton for Valentine’s date dinner with the wife.

Whichever Speedy you go for, I feel that you can't really go wrong :D
The Snoopys, Trilogy broad arrow, Apollo's and more, they're all stunners!(albeit the price on some models are "a bit" rich for my taste haha).

ps. love that Hamilton, a bit to large for my baby arms sadly, but a coworker of mine owns one and it looks amazing on him(as do it on you mate!) :)

Cheers!

I have one of the speedmasters ,the 3220.50, that is the least liked in the Speedmaster community.

In my opinion a real beauty with all its complications (which I admit I can only read with spectacles :) )

this is not mine but a similar one from internet

I do really like the 12-6-9 dials and day/month-complications on this model, something a bit different from the rest(in a good way!) beautiful watch indeed :D

I’m a big fan of this one. I had the grey dial version with a touch of blue on one of the subdials. I’ve always regretted selling that one. Wear yours in good health.

I’ve been wearing a Seiko 5 Auto. It’s not an exact replica or an original but a close modern copy of the Seiko watch commonly used by MACV-SOG during the Vietnam war that I don’t worry about getting dirty. I upgraded the band to a Barton Tropical band. An inexpensive watch great for daily wear, water resistant and the band is washable which works for my line of work.

Thanks to John, for posting all the tanks. I love tank watches! I have a couple modern day Bulova ones, actually women's watches, small but easy to read.
I love rectangular and square watches too. I have a Steve McQueen Monaco (not my picture)

and this beautiful Eterna Madison. Need to wear both of there more often.

I was a MACV–SOG pilot out of Kontum/Dak to, and 57 years later I am just now hearing about the watches issued to the team members. Thanks for enlightening me. https://www.watchesofespionage.com/...FSX7kng7tAHQ8P-Thz2IUQyL-K_VlmwPDUikkgMpSLGIQ

I’m sure you’ve seen some crazy stuff! Thanks for your service, being a military history buff that’s one of the articles that inspired me to purchase a copy! Hah
Well, it has inspired me to purchase a copy as well. I want one with the original OD band.

When I did those missions at FOB II,* I supported all of the teams; however, when I inserted a team, that team belonged to me, and I was responsible for getting them out alive. It was close at times, but I never lost a team and never had a team member killed.

The SOG missions were run by the CIA and were classified at a level above top secret. I have forgotten the designation, but basically it meant we could never discuss what we did there as the missions would never be declassified. The sanctions were clearly spelled out, and it impressed me enough that I never discussed our missions away from FOB II. Nor did any other of the aircrew.

Then, surprisingly, in the 70s the missions were declassified, and we were free to discuss what we had done. I was still leery of talking about it. It wasn't until the 80s that I felt comfortable discussing those missions.

Several people have told me I ought to write a book, and I probably should have done so 30 years ago when the events were fresh in my mind. But I didn't take notes, and most of those events have been erased from my memory. Plus, John Plaster's book, SOG, The Story Of Secret Commandos In Vietnam is a definitive work. It would be hard to improve on that. I suppose I could give an aircrew's perspective, but, as I said, most of those events are no longer available to me.

I do have some of the SOG items the SF guys gave to me in appreciation for getting them out, but a watch was not one of them. One of the items they gave me was a knife. They also taught me how to sharpen it. Their knives had to be extremely sharp, and they passed that skill on to me.

That was a time long ago, but I am going to get one of those watches to add to my SOG memorabilia.

* Any SF guys reading this will immediately recognize the location.
