I noticed that photo this morning. The men appear to be of smaller stature (even with hats), but still, that thing is huge. Without intending to hijack the thread, would anyone know the breed? A Belgian?

I agree!

McSorely's looked pretty much the same when we used to try to hang out there in high school, though I don't remember the stove. They were pressured and relented to allow women patrons about the same time as Stuyvesant High School - 1969-70.
