Looking into the eyes of the boy soldier sitting in the middle reminds me of the campfire scene with the young rebels from the movie "Ride With the Devil" or the novel it was based on, "Woe to Live On".

"He was up there once long ago, long ago, way before they hung him. He said the dirt was so rich you could eat it like porridge."
