I believe they are miniature hats so you could gift a hat to someone and they would go make their own selection/bash.

That's what I was referring to. I have a small collection of those myself. Wish I could trade them in for hats!

You see them quite often listed at "salesmen samples" on auction sites and classified lists, but they were a form of gift card.

Well, the original question wasn't "What are they?" but, "Is that what they are?"

I guess you fellows agree that is what they are. I don't think I have any with straps, though, as seems to be shown in the photo.

I’m pretty sure that the gentleman in the front row, far left, is famous Texan and inventor of Rodeo bulldogging, Bill Pickett (http://www.famoustexans.com/billpickett.htm) – so this is likely a photo from The 101 Ranch Show. Pickett worked for the 101 Ranch from 1905 until his death in 1932.

Robert, you are probably correct & I didn't even think about Pickett when I posted that picture. I have one of the original Pickett movie posters in the original frame from the movie made of his life. I'll take a pic & post it tomorrow or as soon as I can. I have a collection of Wild West show items which includes items from Ranch 101 & the Miller Bros.

Last Sunday was the 134th anniversary of the death of Jesse James. There aren't many pics of Jesse wearing a hat but among them is this pic taken when he was approximately 16 yrs old. It was probably taken not long before he was shot off his horse as he rode alone into Lexington, Mo to surrender as required by Federal troops at the end of the Civil War. Fearing ambush by Federal troops the rebel gurrellas decided to ride in individually. In hindsight it might have been safer had they rode in as a group. As a result of what happened to Jesse several gurrellas never officially surrendered as required by law. Jesse managed to get to the river & escape but carried a festering wound the rest of his life.
