Guinness first, then Ommegang Witte and Hennepin have become my standards.

[perhaps because i live near Ommegang brewery and have sympathy for their efforts.]

in my house it is -food-. ;)

it's funny, my uncle (by marriage) is from Southampton, UK and maintains that the only lunch for a "real man" is two pints of Guinness and a scotch egg w/ Coleman's mustard.

Which has substantially more calories, from better sources than the three very good, very Fresh tacos and the Mountain Dew I had for lunch today.

I might go with a glorp of HP or Daddies in lieu of the Coleman's but I cannot help but endorse this repast as powerful evidence that there is a God !

Just in time for Halloween.

PERUWELZ, Belgium – Full moons are often associated with tides, insanity and creatures like werewolves, but it turns out they're also good for brewing beer. In Peruwelz, a small, sleepy town in southern Belgium, a family-owned brewery has produced its first batch of specialist beer brewed by the light of a full autumnal moon. It isn't so much a nod to mythology as a recognition of nature's impact on the science of brewing. The full moon speeds up the fermentation process, shortening it to five days from seven, which adds extra punch to the beer without making it harsh, according to connoisseurs. The finely balanced, gold-colored beer is 10 percent alcohol by volume, extremely strong by most European or U.S. standards but not uncommon in Belgium, where traditional monk-brewed beers frequently hit 10 or 12 percent.

Beer School (Beer 104 at Schultzy's Restaurant)

last week, wheat, wit and white:

Widmar Wheat Ale
Maisels Hefe-Weisse
Pinkus Weisse
Schneider Weizen Edel-Weisse
Alpine Hefe-Weisse
Weihenstephaner Kristall Weisse
Sierra Nevada Kellerweis
Schneider Hopfenweisse
Erdinger Dunkel-Weisse
Hoegaarden Wit
Allagash White
Pike Dry Wit
Berliner Weisse – (don’t remember whose Berliner Weisse)
Aventinus Eisbock
Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen

If I never have the eisboc again, that is fine with me. At 12%ABV, it was not a balanced beer. The rest had their merits (at various levels).
I will specifically look for the allagash white to have again.
And the Alpine, from Oroville, WA, is the best U.S. hefeweizen I have had.
They don't bottle, so it is hard to find outside of Spokane, Leavenworth or Seattle, WA.

Picked up some Dogfish Head Punkin Ale tonight, sadly they were sold out of Saison du Buff and Bitches Brew and even worse, they doubt they are getting anymore in!

My current favourite is the North Yorkshire stout, Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout.

I had the same thing two nights ago with my steak dinner and quickly realized I'd forgotten just how good the Oatmeal Stout is! One of my all-time favorites.

Deschutes Abyss

At a recent Oktoberfest celebration, Deschutes Brewery was pouring tastes of both their 2008 and 2009 Abyss. An informal poll showed that women tended to prefer the 2008 (smoothed out a bit by aging?) while men preferred the 2009 (more pronounced alcohol taste).

Anyone here have an opinion on this?

I like a good Amber or Dark. Killians Red... Dos Equis Amber.... Modelo Negra are my top ones.

Although I had an Oyster Stout recently that was awesome.

I've become a huge Guinness fan. And there are some very good variations at the local pubs that do their own micro brew.

I spent the summer trying all sorts of beer, I was in a very experimental mood. I really enjoyed the Hoegaarden Original White Ale. Normally I'm not a a fan of white ales but very much enjoyed it. A pleasant surprise.
