I had a very similar one for a couple of years. It was incredibly warm, but the damn thing never quite fit me the way I wanted - sleeves were fine but the body was too loose.

I never have any luck with vintage stuff but figured $20 was worth the gamble. My biggest fear will be my allergies. I'm terribly allergic to certain types of wool.

$20 is more than worth the gamble! I know what you mean, though, I've had a grand total of two vintage buys that I've hung on to: a French waisted chore coat and a longer Swedish number. The French one I'm particularly fond of for the two days that we get up here when it's too warm for even an A-2.

That looks like a super buy. Shadow plaid is great. You might be able to date it somewhat by the label design, or possibly by the WPL number, or you might find a union tag sewn inside one of the pockets.

Thanks Michael, I'll throw some more pics up when it arrives. Maybe this belongs in the vintage hunting thread? I'm sure there's folks here who know much more than I do about these coats but I can easily see myself falling down yet another outerwear rabbit hole here...really dig the mackinaw and there seems to be a plethora of options

Here's a cloth barnstormer type coat by a specialist clothing company in the UK which is now sold out or something. They called it a "jeep coat" but it only vaguely resembles the classic US Army vehicle coat/mackinaw. From what I can tell you can't get them now, and I'm sure they were hugely expensive, but here's photos anyway.

This is really nice for something modern and a lot better looking than the WWII item. As a daily wearer I would guess it would out sell the US Army design more than 10 to 1. The original garments are fine for doing what they did though now strictly for reenactors I guess.
