The best thing of all, of course, is that today's successful escape brings us that much closer to the day Burma meets Raven Sherman. Unstoppable force, meet immovable object.

Oh, and wouldn't it be a neat twist if Slagg getting blackjacked in the head by those thugs turned him evil again.

I am looking forward to Pat, Raven, the DL and, hopefully, Hu Shee returning at some point and Dude and April as well.

Anything that breaks the current LOA storyline will be an improvement.

Lost me here since these characters are as yet drawn, sketched, penciled in unknown Pirates folk awaiting
cartoonist conception, or appeared earlier sight unseen. However Burma has definitely been surprised by Wolff; whom
touched her heart as few others before have done, leaving her a bit shaken.
As Charlotte Bronte remarked, The heart has hidden treasure; in secret kept; in silence sealed.
Burma has a secret love. :)

Reports from the German High Command claim that Soviet forces "are surrendering or in wild retreat" as Nazi Panzer divisions slammed deep into heavily fortified zones along the Russian frontier. A gain of ten miles was claimed at some points by German military officials. While the heavily-fortified city of Brest-Litovak, in former Polish territory, was heavily bombarded by land and air, German mechanized divisions rolled thru concrete defenses, pillboxes, and Soviet tank lines. It was asserted that German forces have discovered that "Russian light tanks are of poor quality and are easily shattered by armor piercing bullets, with most of their crews killed instantly."

Reports from Moscow stated that another 5,000,000 men have been called up for military service to stem the German invasion, and discounted Nazi claims of heavy Soviet losses. The reports from Russia did acknowledge that "at two villages along the frontier the enemy scored minor successes," but further asserted that Nazi air attacks have been driven back by a "decisive rebuff" from Soviet planes and anti-aircraft batteries. A Moscow broadcast relayed in the United States by NBC declared "we have always known the Nazi pigs would sooner or later dig their snouts into the Soviet garden."

Reports from several sources, including a dispatch from Ankara quoting the boasts of German officers in Turkey, state that Germany expects to achieve its objectives in the Russian invasion "within three weeks." Those objectives are believed to revolve around seizure of the vast agricultural wealth of the Ukraine, along with other storehouses of food, oil, and minerals in the Caucasus region.

Acting Secretary of State Sumner Welles, speaking on behalf of President Roosevelt, said today that "while all forms of dictatorship are inimical to the American way of life, the immediate issue is to stop Hitlerism." But the Secretary warned against speculation concerning the immediate extension of Lend-Lease aid to the Soviet Union, indicating that the President, if asked today, "would not know what answer to give."

Two paving contractors have testified that a slush fund of $40,000 was raised in 1937 for the benefit of Queens Public Works Commissioner John J. Halleran., according to Special Assistant Attorney General John Murtagh, aide to Assistant Attorney General John H. Amen. Murtagh told Queens County Judge Charles S. Colden that the money was paid out to a person he would only describe as "an arch-conspirator" in the Queens paving racket. Murtagh made his statement during a hearing to determine whether the Amen Office has the authority to subpoena Halleran to testify before the Amen Grand Jury in its ongoing probe of that racket.

Repercussions of the Rapp-Coudert Committee's investigation of Communist activities at Brooklyn College flared up today in the middle of commencement ceremonies for the Class of 1941, after one member of that class was denied her degree as a result of her testimony before the Committee. About half a dozen students jumped up on their seats and began shouting and waving picket signs following the opening rendition of the National Anthem, and were immediately set upon by police and members of the college's custodial staff. The resulting melee raged in the middle of the campus quadrangle among some 7,000 to 8,000 invited guests, before the protesting students were subdued by the police. The protest was triggered by the decision of College president Dr. Harry Gideonse to deny a degree to 20-year-old Miss Rosalind Cohen, who was to have graduated today with her class, on the basis of her testimony concerning her involvement with the American Student Union, claimed by the Rapp-Coudert Committee to be "Communist dominated." Miss Cohen's testimony was given behind closed doors, and has not been made public -- although Miss Cohen has declared she does not oppose it being made so -- but Dr. Gideonse, in a letter to Miss Cohen, declared her remarks before the Committee to have "cast doubt upon her qualifications to graduate." Miss Cohen's family and Dr. Gideonse engaged in a heated exchange of telegrams over the weekend, with the final wire being Dr. Gideonse command that Miss Cohen appear in his office this morning to determine whether she had "any significant changes to make in her testimony."

The ten-month-long strike at the Leviton Manufacturing Company in Greenpoint may finally be nearing an end, with union officials planning a session with company representatives today that could bring the 1600 strikers within 50 cents of the weekly minimum originally sought by setting a minimum weekly wage of $15.50 per week.

A 28-year-old welder is under arrest today on a homicide charge stemming from the death of Miss Flora Poore, 32-year-old Sunset Park resident found stabbed in her apartment on June 13th. Police say Nicholas Jascewsky of 155 Bay 7th Street, who is married with two children, admitted to killing Miss Poore following "an altercation," the nature of which police did not disclose.

(Pretty bold of Mr. Cohn to call out Hollywood on its hypocrisy -- you don't often see that in a newspaper review in a time when movie advertising is a pretty big deal for a paper, especially one with as shaky a financial standing as the Eagle. And pretty bold of the paper not to censor him.)

The Eagle Editorialist calls the German invasion of Russia "an embarrassing problem for the United States," and suggests that rather than offering any aid or assistance to the Soviet Union, America should continue to provide all-out aid to Britain and wait until after the war to deal with the USSR, if it "survives the war." The invasion, however, "should be a final lessons to us in America as to the futility of making any agreement with the Nazis."

Reader John Cascione writes in to deplore Larry MacPhail's refusal to rent Ebbets Field for an America First rally as being the sort of action typical of "those who revel in the shedding of blood," and he claims that "80 percent of the propaganda" is controlled by "the war makers."

After reading about the Nazi invasion of Russia and knowing the enormous death toll that would ensue, the paving-contract bribe investigation almost feels "friendly," in a "oh that's just Brooklyn being Brooklyn" way. I get that it isn't; that those are corrupt politicians and businessmen conspiring to steal from the taxpayer, but it ain't millions of bodies lying dead on battlefields.

Mothers and daughters have competed for the same man, but this particular mother doesn't have what it takes to win this fight with her daughter.

Once upon a time long long ago and far away back in peripatetic youth in Langadas, Greece-a young lady proposed to me-
through her mother according to family custom. Circumstances beyond this post would not allow my acceptance,
and, looking back it was probably best. Hardly a mother-daughter competition, of course, but I can attest having
mom in the equation at all exponentially raises room temperature. ;)

Reports from Berlin claim that German troops have broken thru the strong Russian bunker fort defense lines in the middle of the Eastern Front, in the region of the Brest-Livotsk fortress on the Bug River. The official German DNB news agency states that "operations along the Soviet front are continuing according to plan with great success." A United Press report from Ankara, Turkey quoted military informants as reporting that "numerous units of the Russian Black Sea fleet" had left for the open sea after heavy Luftwaffe attacks at the port of Odessa and other harbors.

Reports from Moscow admitted the loss of Brest-Livotsk today, but claimed marked Red Army successes in other sectors. The second Russian military communique of the new conflict stated that no less than 300 German tanks have been destroyed in the Shaulai area, and that 5000 German officers and men have been captured.

Great Britain and Russia have pledged mutual aid in "a fight to the finish" against Nazi Germany, announced Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden to a cheering House of Commons today. It was also suggested that Britain has received assurances of "increasing support" from the United States.

Finland has pledged to take only a "defensive role" in the Russo-German conflict, but indicated that it will allow free passage of Nazi troops across the Karelian Isthmus, "leaving it to Germany" to make any attack on Russia that may be made from that Baltic danger point.

Mayor LaGuardia predicted today that Italy will be the next victim of a German invasion, and that, eventually, "Hitler will declare war on himself."

Fire tore early this morning thru the fourth floor of an old law tenement in the Fort Greene section, killing three people. The building at 135 Lafayette Avenue, equipped with no fire escapes or other safety features, was being used as a rooming house by its owner, Mrs. Geraldine Kane. Plunging to their deaths from a fourth-floor window in a desperate attempt to escape the flames were 27-year-old Max Slobadow and his 25-year-old Mildred, who threw a mattress out the window before jumping, but failed to hit it when they landed. Mrs. Slobadow nearly struck the building's owner before her impact on the street below. Burned to death in his room was 60-year-old Samuel Bachrack, who was unable to escape from the onrushing flames. Three other tenants did escape, by climbing out their windows and leaping from the building ledge across an alley to the roof of 137 Lafayette Street next door.

The ten-month-old strike by 1600 employees of the Leviton Manufacturing Company in Greenpoint is over, with workers at the plant due to return to their jobs tomorrow. Members of Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers voted last night to accept a new contract setting a minimum weekly wage of $15.50, 50 cents less than the $16 originally sought.

The U. S. Navy is attempting today to end ongoing San Francisco shipyard strikes by attracting striking machinists into civil service. The move has raised objections from union leaders, who call it an attempt at strike-breaking, and has urged its members to avoid the recruiting booths. Those who sign up will immediately be hired by the Navy as civilian employees and put to work in the yards.

The next round of draft registration begins in New York City on July 1st, with 70,000 young men who will reach their 21st birthdays by that date required to submit their names, addresses, and other necessary information to their local Selective Service boards. Registration will be conducted at neighborhood Selective Service offices rather than at local schools, as was done last year. All men in the specified age group are required to comply with the order, with the only exceptions being those men already on active service in a branch of the Armed Forces or those already granted specific exemptions.

Well-informed quarters in Washington state that Japan may invade Siberia if the Soviet Union collapses under Germany's attack, thus bringing the war that much closer to United States territory in Alaska. It is stated in those quarters that Japan will make no move against Siberia until the question of Nazi-vs.-Soviet strength is "decisively settled."

(Jeez, with all the buildup about "at last the Black Spider will go" you'd think they'd look happier about it.)

A lawsuit to oust Queens Public Works Commissioner John J. Halleran from office, thus revoking his retirement pension, has been filed in Queens County Court by Assistant Attorney General John H. Amen. The suit, the first of its kind to be filed in the state, under constitutional provisions requiring public officials to file a waiver of immunity before a grand jury or forfeit their jobs. Halleran has refused to sign such a waiver. The suit was filed a day after the Amen Office announced that it has evidence that a $40,000 slush fund for Halleran's benefit was assembled in 1937 by a group of paving contractors in exchange for political favors. An attorney for Halleran charged the Amen Office with attempting to supersede the authority of the Queens district attorney by "either seeking a bribery indictment or else preparing a presentment to smear Halleran." Judgement on the suit has been reserved.

(I realize there's a lot going on in the world right now, but why is this story buried on page 3? Halleran has been in charge of Public Works in Queens since 1929, is now implicated in a vast scandal, and this, therefore, is huge. And yet it gets a single short column underneath a contest photo of street-corner gawkers. Who's beholden to who, Mr. Schroth?)

Agreed, from the start, it's felt as if some "powerful interest" behind the scenes is trying to get this squashed. Either Halleran is that powerful or a robust investigation would expose other powerful people who are trying to prevent it from happening.

As the expression goes, need breaks iron, Mungo might very well be back.

Also, more broadly, a manager of a baseball team should not feel comfortable about his pitching until he has ten outstanding starters. Since he'll never have ten outstanding starters, no baseball manger should ever be ever comfortable with his pitching. Ever.

The Red Army, aided by dive bombers and charging cavalry, are reported today to have smashed back a German drive from Rumania across the Pruth River and to have inflicted heavy losses on Nazi mechanized columns. A Russian war communique issued today also stated that Soviet bombers have struck Koenigsburgh, capital of East Prussia; Danzig, Lublin, and Warsaw in German-occupied Poland, Constanza and Sulina along the Rumanian Black Sea coast, and the Helsinki airport in Finland. The communique released by the official Soviet news agency Tass also acknowledged the loss of 374 Russian planes during the three days since the German invasion, but asserted that Soviet forces have downed 380 Nazi planes.

U. S. Senator Bennett Champ Clark (D-Missouri) last night told an America First rally at the Columbus Club that any aid to the Soviet Union in its war against Nazi Germany would "defeat the United States' campaign against subversive activities." Speaking before an audience of 2000 persons at the rally sponsored by the Park Slope Chapter of the America First Committee, Senator Clark warned that "once we have climbed into bed with Bloody Joe, no restraints are possible on the spread of Communist propaganda in the United States."

Lithuanian exiles in Brooklyn are cheering the Nazi invasion of Russia. Mrs. Hypatia Yces lives in a tenement with her four children in Williamsburg, a far cry from the palatial estate on which they lived in their home country before the Soviet Union took control of that land, and says that life in Lithuania will be better under the Nazis, whom she expects to treat that country as "a protectorate." Mrs. Yces was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, daughter of a wealthy Lithuanian-American physician, and moved to Lithuania when she married Dr. Martnyas Ycas, a member of the Russian Duma under the Czar, and subsequently Minister of Education under the Lithuanian Republic. The family went into exile following the absorption of Lithuania into the USSR, and Dr. Ycas subsequently died of heart failure last year. Mrs. Yces forfeited her American citizenship when she became a Lithuanian citizen, but is hoping to have that citizenship restored this year.

Leaders of New York City's transport union stormed out of a conference with the Board of Transportation today, bringing the likelihood of a city-wide subway strike that much closer. Transport Workers Union leader Michael Quill warned that if a general transport strike by 30,000 workers does occur, "the city will bear responsibility."

Twenty-five Brooklyn men and women face Federal charges of defrauding the Federal Housing Administration out of $250,000 in loans which were, according to the indictments, used to start private businesses instead of for renovation of homes. Among those named in the indictment are four members of the Litvin family, known to have financial ties to the Brooklyn Murder For Money Gang, who are charged with using the illegally-obtained Federal funds to start gasoline stations, a beauty shop, a shoe store, a cafeteria, and a food market.

In Italy, the Mussolini Government has issued a decree banning the wearing of pants by women. "It was about time to take action against this stupid Hollywood style," declared an editorial in the Italian newspaper Nazione in Florence. The decree also includes shorts, and adds that if a woman is seen riding a bicycle in shorts, the bicycle will be confiscated.

Two women who claimed bingo prizes totaling $150 using doctored cards are in jail today on charges of fraud against the operators of the game. Forty-one-year-old Mrs. Ida Pack of 318 S. 3rd Street and 35-year-old Mrs. Marie Aldrich of Manhattan were arrested after presenting the falsified cards last night at St. Peter Claver's R. C. Church. Police from the Classon Avenue precinct discovered equipment used in forging the cards, including a rubber stamp used to create fictitious serial numbers.

The Board of Directors of the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club, Inc. today issued a statement fully endorsing team president Larry MacPhail's refusal to rent Ebbets Field to the Brooklyn America First Committee. In a telegram sent today to Committee representative Marcellus H. Evans, the Board declared that the ballpark "will not be turned over to any group or committee for purposes of propaganda where controversial issues are involved."

The pastor of the Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church today added his voice to the "war of words" between Larry MacPhail and the America First Committee. The Reverend Dr. Alfred Grant Walton told the Eagle today that it should be the Committee that apologizes to MacPhail, whose views are "those of the majority of the American people." Dr. Walton further noted that, since Ebbets Field is privately owned by the Dodgers, neither MacPhail nor the ball club is under any obligation, legal or otherwise, to rent the facility to anyone. "Mr. MacPhail is not opposing free speech," declared the clergyman. "He is merely saying that he does not want this particular variety of free speech within his bailiwick. It is wholly unjust to call this 'the Hitler way.' The Hitler way is to attempt to coerce actions by embarrassment, intimidation, and threats."

Eight hundred graduates of the Erasmus Hall High School Class of 1941 were warned last night to "beware the third party movement now forming under Col. Charles A. Lindbergh." Commissioner of Investigations William B. Herlands further warned in his commencement address that this movement is made up of "a motley assortment of Fascists, isolationists, a lunatic fringe of religious bigots, and assorted malcontents," and that by the time the Class of 1941 reaches voting age, this new party "will be in full operation."

The National Broadcasting Company expects to provide a minimum of fifteen hours of television service a week under the new commercial operating license expected to be issued for its station as of July 1st. The Federal Communications Commission has authorized television on a commercial basis as of that date, and NBC expects to operate its station at least six days a week, afternoons and evenings, with the exact breakdown of operating hours to be determined.

He looks stupider by the day in this entire affair.

The 1928 apartment building I live in has fire escapes that are, by law, inspected every five years (costs our coop quite a bit of money to keep them in good working order, which, of course, we do). We also have several fire stairwells. I marvel at these internal-to-the-building stairwells only used in case of fire. They are a lot of real estate that sit unused - completely unused - in a city where every foot of space is expensive. I'm glad we have them; I'm not complaining; it's just funny that all this real estate has, literally, not been used for now almost a hundred years.

Russian troops today recaptured the town of Przemysi, on the Russian-German frontier in southwestern Poland, and have cut off German infantry from mechanized divisions in the Vilna area on the Lithuanian-Polish frontier. An official war communique from Moscow reports ferocious fighting today in southeastern Poland, and that Soviet troops have thrown back all German-Rumanian efforts to cross the Pruth River on the Bessarabian front. It is further stated that Russian forces themselves have crossed the Pruth and are now engaging with German and Rumanian forces on the German side of the line. Official German reports admit today that "obstinate resistance" by Red Army troops is slowing the drive of Nazi Panzer divisions into Russia, but continue to predict that "operative successes on a grand scale" will be forthcoming as a result of German victories along the frontier.

The vice president of the Carblock Paving Company of Brooklyn will serve 30 days in jail after being found guilty of obstruction of justice and contempt of court. Ernest Block of 77 Lefferts Avenue was charged with interfering with the investigation of paving contract fraud in Queens and with refusing to testify before an Amen grand jury concerning what he knows about illegal political campaign contributions in that borough. The Amen Office has three days to prepare and present an order of commitment, after which Mr. Block will have three days to show cause why he should not be jailed. Mr. Block will also be fined $250.

Mayor LaGuardia and fiery Transport Workers Union president Michael Quill are headed for a history-making confrontation, with 27,500 transport workers due to vote tonight on a general strike that would paralyze the city's subway system. Mr. Quill vowed today that the union "will not work one hour of the month of July without a signed contract," and further intimated that the city has manipulated local Selective Service boards into calling up five key union leaders for draft examinations as a tactic of intimidation. Colonel Arthur McDermott, head of Selective Service in New York promised a full investigation of that charge if Mr. Quill will furnish the names of the men so summoned.

The Board of Estimate today approved the $1,991,000 plan to widen Hicks Street from Hamilton Avenue to Atlantic Avenue, in order to provide a traffic outlet for the new Gowanus Parkway. The project will widen Hicks Street in the specified section from 60 to 160 feet, and also provides for the construction of two and a half acres of new parkland.

A 28-year-old flying cadet, missing for three days, has been found dead on a railroad track in Franklin, New Hampshire. Cadet Robert Searle Chagee disappeared from Mitchel Field three days ago, after mailing a letter to Army officials that he intended to commit suicide. Marks on the cadet's body indicated that he had been struck by a train. Friends said that Chagee, a graduate of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who was about to be commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Corps, had suffered "a nervous breakdown" five years ago, and that he believed "the weak do not have the right to get in the way of the strong."

Federal price controls on rubber tires and inner tubes will be imposed next week by the Price Control Administration as the first step in heading off a feared rubber shortage. Price Control Administrator Leon Henderson stated today that ceiling prices will be established at both the wholesale and retail levels. Henderson also stated that ceiling prices on automobiles can be expected soon as a result of the Chrysler Corporation's refusal of a Federal order to rescind recent prices increases. The confrontation between the Government and the automaker is expected to lead to the enactment of specific price-fixing legislation in Congress.

The Works Progress Administration will abandon or suspend all but defense-related projects in New York City, in the face of an expected 25-percent reduction in its operating budget for 1941-42. The Brooklyn Eagle learned today that hospital, road, sewer, waterworks, parks, and school construction and improvement projects will be left "high and dry" by the cut in funding, with nearly the entire city WPA payroll of 82,659 expected to be "absorbed" by the defense industry.

The owner of the Fort Greene tenement building ravaged in a fire that killed three tenants this week denies that she is guilty of failing to provide fire escapes and other safety equipment in the building. Mrs. Geraldine Kane of 135 Lafayette Avenue, who operated the four-story structure as a rooming house, was released on $2500 bail after pleading not guilty to second-degree manslaughter charges in Brooklyn Felony Court. Mrs. Kane contended that she had "planned" to equip the building with sprinklers after purchasing it a year ago, and added that "neighbors complained that fire escapes would be unsightly."

Larry MacPhail, fresh from giving the back of his hand to the America First Committee, today announced that the United Service Organizations will take over Ebbets Field tonight for a fifteen-minute presentation before this evening's game between the Dodgers and the Boston Braves. Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, baseball rivals turned golfing opponents, will appear in person for the festivities, with Manhattan District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey to be the featured speaker, touting the USO's campaign to bring recreation to members of America's armed forces in National Defense service. The ceremonies will be broadcast in full over WHN preceding the ball game.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn America First Committee chairman William Leonard fired another shot in the direction of the Dodgers today, challenging the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club, Inc. to state publicly whether it agrees with MacPhail's "offensive attitude" concerning Charles A. Lindbergh, Senator Burton K. Wheeler, and Senator Gerald Nye. The Dodger board this week gave MacPhail's refusal to rent the Flatbush ballpark to the America First group its full endorsement, and declared that the park will not be available to any renters desiring to use it for "propaganda" on "controversial subjects."

If you're planning on traveling by car this summer and intend to take your meals at roadside stands, beware of poor sanitation. Poorly-cleaned kitchens, plates, and utensils can easily spread contagious diseases, and sanitation codes vary from state to state and town to town, with much depending upon the individual attention of the inspecting officer. Patrons should be aware for signs of filth and vermin wherever they stop to dine, and should give their business only to those establishments that show evidence of care in following sanitation rules.

The Eagle Editorialist says rubber rationing in the United States is inevitable, given the situation in the Pacific, and that it would better to impose it now and have time to do so efficiently than to wait until reserves have declined to a critical level.

The EE also praises police in Nassau County for taking steps to rein in the current fad for nude sunbathing at Valley Stream State Park, but he also denies the implication that people from Brooklyn are among those participating. "We are modest and conventional folk," he asserts. "We buy clothes to wear, not to take off," and adds that "our skins are too precious to risk against the vegetation of Nassau County."

The second-place club in the Negro National League invades Dexter Park this weekend as the Newark Eagles surge into town to face the Bushwicks in a Sunday twinbill. The Eagles haven't appeared in Woodside since 1939, when they won the first game of two and tied the other after play was called on account of nightfall. The Newark squad ran away with the first half of the season, but have lagged enough lately that the Homestead Grays have been able to edge them out of first place, but just barely.

While there are differences, it is amazing how much this echoes so many of our current political arguments about the blocking of some groups from both physical venues and social media platforms. As we say all the time, almost nothing is new.

You are spot on Lizzie. A back-of-the-envelop calculation says today's 14.5 ounce can should cost about $2. I think, yes, the quality is probably down, but to be fair, food has become less expensive relative salaries since the 1940s (but not in the last ten or so years).

Or, better yet, hire Nick for Mary Worth - pay Nick what he wants - as he'll have Boomtown running the way it should in a few months.
