Okay, going out for coffee is always a good choice for a first date. Always open the door her, don't go dutch unless she suggests it, and it's okay to hold her hand on the third date.

Dobbs #1: 1950s
Dobbs#2: Early- to mid-1940s
Dobbs #3: I stumbled on dating one like this earlier this year, as Art Fawcett was right and I was wrong. This one is most likely mid-1950s, though it could be later.

thanks for the help , I suprized that #3 is so "new" what are the tell
tail signs that set it apart from#1. I though #1 was newer than #3. I had #1 pick as an almost 60s hat

should I introduce myself to her folks on the first date? Or

#1 could be newer than #3. I can only offer '50s on it, but it could be later in the decade. Your photo doesn't show it, but I'm assuming it has the Golden Coach logo, which started appearing about 1954.

#3: The gold-stamped, slanted Dobbs logo appears to have been used in the early-'50s, perhaps as early as 1946, and seems to be a transistion from the non-gold-stamped, slanted Dobbs logo that had been in use since 1908. The same gold-stamped logo was also used in the '60s. I'm just not sure if #3 is an early-'50s or a '60s hat.

Any other tags inside both of these?

thanks agian . I will take photos of the tags when i get home, funny thing about number 3 is it has the same typeset tag (block, size ect) as number 2. That got me thinking 2 and 3 where from around the same time. Number 1 has the classic type writter tag that you see on 50s hats.

Label date?

Hey everyone. I was looking at buying a vintage Dobbs, but it had a label that I hadnt seen before. I wondered if any of you could help me date the hat based on the label. Was this label used in the 30's, 40's? Heres the pic:

Also, I know that Dinerman has put together a Stetson dating guide based on size tags and sweat bands. Does anyone have a similar dating guide for Dobbs hats based on labels, sweat bands, etc? Thanks.

That liner was used from about 1934 through the end of the decade, and probably a couple of years into the '40s.

Here are two of my favorite hats. I'd appreciate experienced thoughts on their ages, please, gents . . .

I believe this black hat is the older of the two. It has an un-reeded sweatband, no cover over the top of the liner, and a $5.00 price tag. It is made of dense but lightweight (thin) felt and is very soft and flexible. Its brim is 2.5".

I think this silverbelly Fifteen with navy ribbon is quite pretty. It has a reeded sweatband, an "oilskin" liner cover. Its felt is heavier and moderately stiff. Its brim is 2.75". The "Headspring" sweatband was new to me. As you can see, the sweat is pleated at the back and a piece of foam is tacked behind the pleated portion.

Dobbs Gilt-Edge C.1936

Beautiful Black Heather felt of fine quality that molds beautifully. The brim is 2-1/4" wide with a smoothly finished edge. The crown is 5-5/8" and quite straight. The wide and soft pure black non-reeded sweatband is deeply embossed with no gold overlay. The seam is taped and the stitching is very small and closely spaced in parallel. Ads ran for the Gilt-Edge from 1935-39. This one had a newspaper from 1936 under the sweat originally. Condition is really amazing for the felt liner and sweatband--no damages or significant wear. Definitely a long oval.

Very nice. Yours is a little younger than those ads. More modest than the Adulterer or Repeat Offender.

Anyway, it's a 105 sage coloured Carmody. Sold originally for $35.00.
