The Deck Jacket thread.

Gauging the fit of jackets which have a thicker lining from just the external measurements can certainly be tricky. Even with the same style of jacket different manufacturers can use different thicknesses of lining and it’s difficult to know how much internal space is taken up by each type.
On the basis that if a jacket is too tight or small it just won’t get worn if I have to I tend to err on the side of caution and prefer a jacket to possibly be slightly on the larger side.
I know it has already been said by others above but in my opinion when it comes to N-1’s the Pike Brothers version probably gives the best bang for buck out of all those currently on the market.

I also have the dark blue Pike Brothers 1942 Deck jacket (which strangely is actually an XL but fits fine). Although this is obviously a different style and it has a slightly lighter weight of wool lining I actually prefer this over the N-1.
I also think the jacket is great. However, I don't prefer it to the N-1, but see it as a good addition. Something for every temperature ;)
By the way, mine is an L.

Dear All,

Is there any guideline or advise on how tight the drawstring on the hem of a N-1 deck jacket should e adjusted ?

I am aware it depends on your figure, weight, and personal preference. But is there some guidance on this ?

Bought a RMC new, a fe weeks ago. And the lower part of the jacket "yawns" (No, not a big belly)

Help is highly appreciated.

Regards,

Duc

I made mine so that it was only gathered a little. I don't like the look of too much.

Good info thank you! I'm leaning towards the Bronson. Here's the Bill Kelso version I mentioned above

  • 13-ounce jungle cloth shell
  • Alpaca-lined collar
  • Liner: Pile 50% alpaca and 50% wool
  • Zipper and button-through fly front closure (Japan made Talon)
  • Plain cuff with knitted wristlet inside (100% Wool)
  • Drawstring bottom
  • Buttons, urea

Not the Japanese talon!

Should this help anyone with sizing questions.....

Pike Bros N-1 arrived today and fits perfectly, as though it was made to measure

I'm 6ft 2in, 44" chest, 34" waist and broad shoulders and the jacket size is L.

Which N-1 did you buy? Because they turn out differently.

I recently purchased my first (supposedly) authentic n-1 jacket. I hope to carefully clean it and wear it. A few basic pictures are attached below but I've also uploaded a lot more here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196520717@N08/albums/72177720324022019

According to some research I did on the lapel tag's marking, it dates to 1945, a few months before the end of the war. The seller's description said: "This one dates to the 1940s and features all original components. It is fully alpaca lined and features a talon zipper as well as a mouton collar. These longer versions were mainly issued to officers and are far rarer than the standard shorter n-1 deck jackets. This is preserved in fantastic original condition."

Aside from general info to help me authenticate this, since I've never seen another one, I'm wondering if anyone has an idea how the waist synch mechanism works. Or at least, I assume that's what it is. In the back of the jacket two channels are sewn, and on each end of the jacket there are two interior openings for those channels. Each side of the jacket has *one* piece of strap coming out a hole - one side of the jacket has a strap coming out the upper channel, and the other side of the jacket has a strap coming out the lower channel. But for the life of me I can't figure out how you would make the clasps on the straps work, unless I'm missing half of a strap on each side or something.

As a side note, the fit is MUCH different than my Schott leather N-1. It's stamped a size 40 but it's massive on me. It is crazy warm and layerable, but it is a beast of a garment.

In my eyes this is the N-1/2 Winter Parka Coat, worn contemporary with the 1944/45 N-1 Winter Jacket (Deck Jacket).
Some call them Torpedo Boat Parka or PT Boat Parka.
It should originally have come with a hood. This hood could at some point have been removed and this Muron Collar put in place. It's the version without the outer chest pocket and sleeve cuff adjusters.

Cool was it lined with alpaca like the N-1? I have had my eyes on a Navy raincoat, I think it's called the N-2. Does anyone have any pics of that or idea where to find one?
