The Cavanagh Club

The Carter sweatbands and the Cavanagh crest clips seemed to have been used by Cavanagh almost exclusively on their Homburgs in the late-1930s into the 1940s. I don't know if they were standard or an option, but they turn up more often than not. I do own a Cavanagh Homburg with clip but without Carter Sweatband. I think we've seen one or two non-Homburg hats with Carter sweatbands, but I can't remember.

All of the clips I own do not have the patent number on the back. Yours is first I remember seeing with the number.

Because of the factory label, I'd say your Homburg is 1940s.

It served as an advertising decoration, nothing more. It was used in place of the bow/trefoil cord on the sweatband.

There are so many specialty hat groups but I didn't see one for Cavanagh, did I just miss it. Anyway here's some pictures of one of mine looking for some company:

This hat is a beige/taupe w/ a bit of green and 2-1/4" brim.
My other Cavanagh is in for C&B
this is a nice one, i like the color, , for me i need a wider brim at least 2 1/2

50s Dark Brown Cavanagh

Standard dark brown Cavanagh that I picked up for a good price. 2 1/4" brim with Cavanagh Edge; 5 1/2" crown wrapped in a 1 15/16 grosgrain ribbon. Bow has standard Cavanagh unheamed trailing edges. I own several Cavanagh hats and I've noticed they don't seem to have very much information on the leather sweatband. This one for example only has "Cavanagh Edge" in the front and the initials of presumedly the original owner. There is nothing on the band to indicate where the hat was originally sold. I'm guessing this one was made in the early 50s!

I picked up this charcoal gray Cavanagh--no other distinction, just a Cavanagh--yesterday in a local shop. It's in need of a cleaning, but it's otherwise in good shape; the sweatband is a little dry, but it's not bad. With the liner design and the information label, I'd guess this hat comes in right before 1959, before Hat Corporation pulled the block depths from the label.

I can't figure out what this says--any guesses? The store imprint is for L. Strauss & Co Inc, Indianapolis.

Funnily enough, I have a grey Cavanagh Homburg....with an L. Strauss imprint from Indianapolis, and an undecipherable signature. Although mine has a different signature.

Interesting! Wonder if this was an added layer of customization. How unkind of previous generations not to document better. :D

1960s Cavanagh fedora. Great condition, just needs a cleaning. 4 7/8" finished crown, 2 1/4" brim.
This one's for Charlie :D
Was the "Military" a model? Anyone know?

WOW, Harv! Nice find, and I'll bet you really rock that hat. Very very nice. Can't wait to see it when you're ready for a noggin shot.

That's cheating, Harv... Every picture looks better when you include that handsome guy!

Very sophisticated look to that Cav! Give it a little tilt... What does Mrs. Harv think?
