- and Petitgas became a Borsalino retailer in 1872 ;)

Actually both the building and shop are listed, so the rent is probably ridiculously low in order to keep it going as original as possible. The shop is located in the very most expensive part of CPH, and it would be impossible to continue at market rent.

The fact, that it's so hard to dig out info on Danish mens' hat production, made me start a project a couple of months ago - heavily inspired by Brad's and Steve's (mayserwegener) work. I'm trying to gather info and documentation for a small web site on Danish hat production. Hope it'll be up this coming Winter.

Ole, that sounds really exciting and interesting. I'm already looking forward to being able to use your site. Can't wait.

The Borsalino Featherweight I just purchased from Moon. Could not be more please! I can't believe how light, soft and malleable the felt is.

Thanks for the nice comments. I really do love it. It's going to be my "go to" hat for a long time.

Vintage Borsalino

I won this hat on ebay a month ago:

The felt is very soft and pliable. Just like my Optimo Indy. It has a sewn in liner and the sweatband is sewn straight to the felt without the synthetic strip newer hats have. It has the nearly 6 inch row of corrugated material under the front of the sweatband. The brim is 3 inches wide and the crown is about 5 1/2 inches unbashed. It has a store name, Will H. Melet Co. of Clarksburg W. Va stamped on the sweatband. Under the band there's a paper tag :
179p 19019 7 5/8
Palladio Ludoela
There's another tag under the sweatband that is the store price tag and it says $20. I would imagine the price today on this hat would be up there with the Optimo. It appears to have been rarely worn, if at all.
Is there any way to indentify the year on this hat? I tried emailing Borsalino of America, but haven't heard back from them.

Yes, with luck, if you very carefully fold down the sweatband on a Borsalino you often find the hand written or stamped date that the hat was finished. Good luck! Be very careful if the sweatband is dry and brittle.

image.jpeg What have I done? Will my marriage survive it? Have I gone mad? OK how mad?

I've just dived in and made a "buy it now" purchase on eBay. image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg

Yes I probably did pay too much
image.jpeg But I like the look of it, I've had a close inspection and as far as I can see I don't think that the straw has cracked yet at that very sharp front crease.... I hope not or I'll have to make it my 'gentleman of the road' hat. I wondered if, when it arrives (and so long as eBay's disastrous Pitney Bowes Global Wrecking Program hasn't ripped it to shreds), should I gently steam those razor creases out of it and give the area a bit of tender loving care? Masage the straw with something and if so, with what? Soak it in a tub of virgin's milk maybe? If so has anyone seen a virgin about anywhere recently?

I believe I'd be inclined to treat the sweatband and leave the rest as is.
