Tom, I would not recommend London Cleaners for anything but Ribbon work, I had an atrocious cleaning experience there that took 4
months to resolve. On the other hand Kathy does good ribbon work and has a great stash of vintage ribbon stock.

Ps the borso looks great!

I understand what you mean, but we need to be at least a little charitable, these people are in their 70s and still working. I thought I would try it, and it didn't work out for the best, but you have to admit when they sent your hat out to be redyed at their expense, you were thrilled. And then, if I recall correctly, you sold it?

I have since learned that "Palladio" is the color. :)

Your new favorite shop might get a look by me to "correct" a modern Stratoliner. We'll see.

Borsalino ~ Maurice L. Rothschild ~ 7 1/4 ~ With Original Price Tag ???? WITH PICS

Borsalino ~ Maurice L. Rothschild ~ 7 1/4 ~ With Original Price Tag ????

Hello,
I have a Borsalino I am looking for information on, value in particular. This seems to be the place to do so! I can tell it is a Borsalino imported by Maurice L. Rothschild & Co. of Chicago. It has the MLC price tag in it with an original price of $20.00. Anyone know more about this hat? Its age? Its value? It is in excelent condition!

The tag inside states as pictured below:

1402P 73019 C 7 1/4
Cerere c/ Ossido "Gatergu ue" ( hand written )

MLR price sticker with $20 on it.

Tom, when I gave my hat business to the London cleaner I too first thought how great to do business locally with a nice elderly family owned business. I can now tell you after having been there and having at least a half dozen hats go through their hands i will not go back ever!
I respect the fact they are elderly but I can also tell you that she often made up extravagant prices for the same service on various hats on her own whim and this bothered me as well.Besides that I will go on to say I had to go back numerous times to have her correct the work she originally did. I frankly stopped being benevolent towards them ESP after she threw out the original ribbon on my Borso which I asked her to keep. I can go on and on but after the Borso incident which took 4 months to resolve I just got wiser and figured out that going there is a bigger liability than it is an asset.
So if you want to believe you are benefiting by having them work on your hats then that's your prerogative and I say Good Luck!

Sweet find!
It's always great to come across a great find like this at a flea market.
And the hat even has the date stamped in it - how convenient , now that will save some arguments as to the vintage!

I have a Echter Borsalino stamped 1958 but it doesn't have the Borsalino on the side of the paper label. I wonder if this the date sold rather than the production year? It does look from around the late 50s early 60s. Interesting!

I've been on the lookout for a Rollable Borsalino for a while so I was really pleased when I saw that Aureliano had a great example for sale.

The hat is the beautiful Borsalino Cobolt Blue and is in super condition. Quite apart from its little party trick of fitting into the small box, it is a good hat as well. Sure, the 2 1/8 brim could be a little wide and the crown could be just a little fuller. No worries though, none of my other hats can fold up this size and pop right up into shape again. This one has already accompanied me on one trip and will be in my bag on a biz trip to Las Vegas next week - I'll be able to take two hats instead of just one.

I'm really pleased to add this little beauty to the Brotherhood Family

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it, David. It was sitting on my hat shelf and I'm happy that now it's actually being worn. :)

Thanks so much. I don't think this will be a daily hat - I have others that have better proportions - but I know it will get a fair amount of use.

Lithe and pretty little Borsalino, David! Incredible that the sweatband has remained so soft and supple over the years.

Thanks - I agree it is amazing that the sweatband is still so flexible. It is much thinner than the sweatbands on any of my other hats, but no sign of drying or cracking. I suspect the hat hasn't been rolled and unrolled too many times.

Here's another "new to me" Borsalino, again thanks to a fellow Lounger.

This one has proportions I really like - 5 3/4 open crown and 2 5/8 bound brim. It was originally sold by Henry the Hatter, part of the price tag remain, but most was removed at some point.

When it arrived, the hat had a wind trolley. I'm not sure if it was original, it wasn't very well attached at either end and was elastic rather than cord. In any case, I've removed it for safe keeping.

Everything else is in super condition - a delight to wear and fast becoming a favorite hat!
