Thanks... I wasn't able to open your attachments, but did (I think) see the hat photographed for auction. I have a mate to this and agree, it is a very nice velour felt.
I don't think I've ever seen one on a Borsalino hat. As for other companies, Stetson was using sweat resistors in the mid 30's, but it was not "onion skin".Is it common in the older Borsalinos to also have the onion skin under the sweat, between the sweat and the felt of the hat? I have an old Wormser with onion skin like this and just wonder how common it is across hat companies, and across the pond.
I thought they were all made from Unicorn fur!Ive never seen a Borsalino hat made from otter. They dont make them like that anymore!
You got that right! In my limited experience, they're made from unobtainium.
+1You got that right!

Otters are too cute!I know Borsalino has used mink, beaver, nutria ,deerfelt and guanaco but not otter .
Unique, nice acquisition.New Borsalino from a young man in my Sunday School class and Scout troop (The Duct Tape Patrol!). He told me it was his great grandfathers' hat. I know it's not that old, pre-80's with a stitched in liner, but I went to the boy's father to make sure he knew about the gift. He corrected his son, saying it was his Aunt's hat and she didn't want it anymore. So, I graciously accepted. No way was I going to accept what could be considered a family heirloom; the grandfather's hat. I would dearly love to have one of my grandfather's hats.
Under the sweat I see:
04283
GIUNLINA
76-88106
7 1/2
On the opposite side under the sweat:
Velour 7 1/2 $45.---
Camel ( and a scribbled mark over the top of the brim size... which I think says 1-7/8)
It looks like a "traveler" style hat. Indeed, Aunt Barb used it as such for hiking, etc. But it's made of nice, soft velour. The color isn't the usual I see for Camel. It's almost a darker deli-mustard color to my eyes. I thought it would go well with the rust colored J Crew shirt I got for Christmas about 12 years ago.
