I question the numbers necessary for a scattered breeding population too. But from time to time unidentified evidence other than footprints does turn up.

For example, what primate or other small animal has an opposable thumb that would make it capable of stripping the fresh meat from between the rib bones of a fish, other than a chimp or a raccoon? And whatever it is is doing it up on the bank & not taking the meat back to water like a raccoon needs to.

My brother lives in small town far-northern California. The size of the wilderness and forests around them is pretty far reaching. He says people in his town kinda chuckle nervously when asked about Sasquatch . Few people are ready to out and out dismiss the sightings and footprints. Most retreat to a safe “who knows?” My bro has a Bigfoot “I want to believe” tshirt that he often wears. He does see a lot of black bear and elk around his property, but no BF so far.

Halloween is approaching (post #1 in the run up to Halloween.)

A whopping 44% of 1,600 Brits interviewed said they’ve seen faeries. 68% of the folks who have seen faeries are women. Sightings are often fleeting and the faeries are often seen peripherally. That notwithstanding, some encounters are more meaty and detailed. The level of belief is perhaps surprising… but maybe not.

As Halloween approaches, have you had any unexplainable experiences? Do you have any connections with ancient Celts and their belief in Samhain, the end of the year when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest. (Samhain was later christianized to All Hallows Eve, or Halloween.)

I was always intrigued by the old yarn about Noah's Ark being found on Mount Ararat, in modern-day Turkey.

Gunung Padang is in the news again. You know that pyramid in Indonesia that is claimed to be 25,000 years old and man made.

My inclination is to agree that more international research is needed. But not by people with preset agendas. This Flint Dibble character is building a brand as a professional debunker. That is just as unscientific as the misty-eyed believers who are completely uncritical. Dig away! The evidence will Provide itself. Or not.

Run up to Halloween post #2

My wife grew up in Hawaii and —in part to take care of her Almost 90 year old mother— we moved to Hawaii when I retired. One of the things I like about Hawaii is its wealth of ghost stories. Many of the stories have deep roots in the Native Hawaiian culture and are respected, even in this scientific age.

One story that you will certainly hear is about “the Night Marchers”. On certain nights it is said that you might witness a string of torches coming down from the mountains. Soon you will hear drums. A parade of ghostly ancient Hawaiian warriors will march by as they escort a high ranking chief to the sea. Do not look at them! If you do you will perish. Instead you are instructed to lay flat on the ground and close your eyes until they are gone. This ghost story still lives! One path of the night marchers is said to cross the campus of Kamehameha School. Another comes down from Kualoa Valley. Heart attacks and Midnight car crashes are sometimes attributed to the tale.

Another one: Madame Pele (the Volcano goddess) is still occasionally seen at night hitchhiking on the road that separates windward from leeward Oahu. She appears as an old woman in a long flowing gown. Typically, when you pick her up, she will vanish into thin air.

I personally have met a man who claims he saw Kamapua’a one dark night when he was cutting across a golf course. Kamapua’a is a demigod said to be half man, half wild boar. The old guy also said he’s seen the mythical (I think) wreck of a WWII bomber that supposedly exists in the rugged mountains of Oahu. And, of course, there are ancient (true) burial caves up there that are Kapu (Taboo).

These stories add a little color and depth to living In Hawaii. They are treated respectfully.

Are there any ghost stories unique to where you live? Happy Halloween!

I’ve rewritten this several times now. A few miles outside town was a group of geologic mounds on property owned by the state. For teenagers it was used as a lovers lane if you had a girlfriend, & a place to drink if you didn’t. Orbs & lights would be seen with regularity. The common explanations in printed newspaper reports of sightings was teutonic plate shift. The area is rich in minerals deposited by glaciers during the ice age, & veins of coal are common. What was not as easily explained were the multiple sighting reports of creatures & ghosts. The County Sheriffs Dept was often dispatched to the site when the hysteria became too much. Today the area is in a State Conservation Area & closes at dark.
