I entered thinking this thread was about cool looking vintage Flasks as I am interested in that and a nice vintage lighter.

Since the last book I read is a bit on the mind control, Programmed to Kill by David McGowan

Although not outright the thesis is that the Military Complex made some sort of Manchurian Candidates that is connected to the Serial Killer phenomena during the 70s-80s. So they can blackmail powerful people, take out any rivals, political to criminal ( as in black ops ) all very unscrupulous, with a sense of “plausible deniability”

Douglas Valentine wrote about the CIA having access to some top brass wrote about some of their more shady operations. His book on the Phoenix Program, shed light on a program to demoralize and frighten the Vietnamese to surrender by making a black market of information to stop “the communists” encouraging some very violent means to scare the surrender of the war in the population. Violence in the level of Mexican cartels and abu grahb.

Psychologist Dr Thomas Narut of the navy said as much in a 1975 press conference but later re-canted it. A program of brainwashing prisoners that they selected due to a predilection of being able to commit violence, such as a dramatic violent childhood.

The Kay Griggs 1998 interview feels like a long form podcast and is very fascinating and veers into the behavior and mental issues of people associated with this side of government.

Welcome, DogFacePonySoldier!
The Fedora Lounge Adventure Speakeasy Klub (F.L.A.S.K.) has covered everything from sea monsters to lost cities to ghosts and the paranormal to bizarre mysteries. But I don’t think we’ve ever talked about strange (or illegal) goings-on at the CIA. Probably this is because so many of our sources are deep within that Agency and a big slice of our huge budget comes from there. Additionally, if you look at any of the personal histories of any of the Agents of F.L.A.S.K, you‘ll generally find straight-faced references to their long past secret work at shadowy three-letter agencies. Nonetheless, despite these facts, we should not shy away from attempting a (cough) thorough investigation into these SHOCKING claims.

And the truth is stranger than fiction.

Fortunately in 1975 —after journalists at the NYTimes exposed a laundry list of misdeeds— the justly famous Church Committee (named after its chairman Frank Church) led the charge to investigate and clean up the intelligence community. The committee found evidence of Assassination attempts, mind control experiments, spying on law-abiding U.S. citizens, and other VERY BAD STUFF. Scroll down in this article for the complete list:

https://www.levin-center.org/frank-church-and-the-church-committee/

Fortunately, the Church Committee‘s work led to some pretty serious reforms. Gerald Ford signed an executive order banning political Assassinations, and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence was established to keep an eye on things. (again, see list of reforms in the above article.)

In short, Doctor Evil was sent packing!

Or was he? As you point out, fiction is filled with rogue spies plotting wicked operations. Furthermore, conspiracy theories abound that say the intelligence community is still up to nefarious deeds. Among my favorites is this one:

https://www.metabunk.org/threads/cl...er-of-meta-materials-from-crashed-ufos.13773/

And of course, we’ve already mentioned rumors that Project Stargate (psychic spies) was never really disbanded. I hope that particular rumor is true!

As they say: “Those who know don’t tell. Those who tell don’t know.”

This post will self destruct in five seconds.
