Storing hats

I took the idea from a local hat shop that uses wires. I'd also seen the pictures from Optimo and though to do it this way. I do have a nice brush to keep the dust down. Its also in a spare room that sees little use. I haven't had a huge dust problem to date. I do tend to snap the snapable brims up. However, there are a few western conversions that take their shape pretty seriously.

I do have another section of wall that is open. How open that section of wall is might be curtailed by the wife walking past the new display wall. I placed one of her hats in the rack to be inclusive.

I plan on a bit of stain and poly for aesthetics, but wanted to get it on the wall as a proof of concept.

Pretty easy.

is there a danger of moths, etc getting into your hat box and attacking your hats? if so, would keeping the boxes in an area protected by mozzie netting or similar be a good idea?... just sharing a thought...

Yes, there is a danger. The damage is done by tiny infant moths in their larval stage - netting is not going to be effective. I find daylight to be a good deterrent to moth activity... works against most forms of vampires too.

I bought a roll of large clear poly bags that are big enough to completely enclose each of my hat boxes. I then fold the excess bag length underneath the box. Seems to keep the critters at bay.

Don't forget about carpet beetles. Moths usually get all of the attention when it comes to being hat eaters but carpet beetles are much smaller than moths, the size of the head of a pin and they can do major damage. I had an infestation that I had to work diligently to get rid of them and I STILL see some of them from time to time. They eat hair, dust and other natural fibres but I have not seen them in my hat room thank goodness.

Nope. I plan to go to a thrift shop and get some old 100% cotton bed sheets and cut them to size and wrap around each box, that way the hats can still "breathe".

I realize most of the discussion in this thread is about felt hats, but what about cotton hats?

I recently acquired a couple of cotton twill safari type hats. We're not talking cheapo Wal-Mart grade hats but really nice ones from Jaxon and Dorfman Pacific.

Knowing these are likely to get sweaty and hot while wearing them during the summer, do they need to be stored in boxes with hat jacks to keep them from shrinking?
