I just looked back at Meyers site, and they list the Panama Open Road now with a black ribbon hatband. When I got mine a couple of months ago it came with a dark tan hatband which complements the overall color better than a black.

They have always had the picture with the black ribbon. When I got mine the picture was black but the hat had a tan ribbon. I like the tan better too. Probably the best thing to do is call first to see what color they have now.

Good question

Wow, Rick. That Hopkins looks superb. Will you change the cattleman's crease?

I will definitely snap the brim down, but I dunno if the crown really is even able to take a re-crease.

Does anyone recognize the weave? Is it a Monti, a Cuenca Brisa, Llano or what? [huh]

I understand Monti's can take a reblock. Cuenca's- not so well. But my ignorance on the subject is vast, I'll be the first to admit! :eek:hwell:

Sunbody has a fine Guatemalan panama hat that looks pretty close to the one above. Comes in open crown and has a three inch brim...I've got one and I like it as much as my shantung open road--maybe more!

Doug,

I have one of those too and love it. I actually have several Sunbody hats and they are great because you can shape them yourself. The one in Rick's picture looks like a tighter weave though. Looks like a nice hat.

For Josh and those interested, this is a shot of the inside of this Stetson Panama. The crown height is about
5 1/4 at the top of the highest peaks of the crease and about 4 at the "valley".

THANKS SO MUCH, Perry!! This is the first picture of the inside of the hat that I've seen and I'm liking it a lot. I like that Stetson used a leather sweat verses a fabric one. I also like that Stetson kept the inside of the crown simple and neat with just a simple tip sticker. The peak crown height (creased) is 5 1/4???? That's actually really exciting to me! That would mean that open crown could measure about 5 1/2 or possibly even 5 5/8 inches tall. The crown looks fairly straight with the cattlemens crease, so it seems like the perfect crown height for a modern Stetson. I think I will HAVE TO get one now. Thanks again Perry.

So Josh, I assume you're going to steam out the cattleman's crease and recrease the hat? I am curious to see how that turns out. Keep us posted and good luck.

The first thing to go is going to be the cattlemans crease. LOL. I will steam the crown back to open and see what kind of block profile the hat will have. If its a fairly straight block, then I will use a center dent with pinches. If the block is too round, I may have to reblock it with a straighter block. That will probably lower the crown height, so I might go with a diamond crease. I would imagine these new panamas have a good amount of shellac and should hold almost any crease. I was also contemplating swapping the thin ribbon for a thick 2 inch or 2 1/8 inch ribbon.

Josh,

I'm still getting used to mine, but the Panama OR does have that straight and (with the cattleman crease) squared-off look that I like. It is tall. I'm trying to steam in a little up-curve to the sides of the brim without losing the down swoop in front. So far, not much luck. (How much steam does this thing need, anyway?)

But it is lightweight and fits well, and keeps the sun off my face!

Landman and jkingrph, the Panama OR at Meyer's is a creamy color with a hint of yellow, sort of like vanilla ice cream, with a dark tan thin ribbon. Much nicer than the little pic on the website, which looks more mustard yellow with a black ribbon.

Thanks for letting me know about the crown, Paul. That just seals the deal. I will get one of these very soon. I find that modern day panama straws need a good amount of steam and if your trying to flare the sides of the brim up a bit, then you have the apply a good amount of steam and push the brim to where you want it while the steam is hitting it. Don't let go of the brim, hold it to where you want it to set, back away from the steam and hold it for a minute. The modern day panamas have a good amount of Shellac which sets up fairly quickly.

Is that even POSSIBLE? Will most panamas hold up to re-crease?
I thought it was pretty much a "done deal".
Please document your process and progress!
