For many, many years I have been using the term "1950s retro-future" to describe many or all of the (admittedly beautiful) things to which "diesel____" (I cannot even write that suffix any longer) refers.

OK, I have to repeat another member's note several pages ago on this thread: the use of "punk" as a suffix for these movements, should no longer be acceptable. It is, at this juncture in time, cliched, passé, and inaccurate. AND, YES, I KNOW VERY VERY WELL THE ORIGIN OF THE SUFFIX, HAVING BEEN A PUNK ROCKER MYSELF IN THE 1980S AND HAVING READ Neuromancer very early on, along with Schismatrix.

You have to take an aesthetic stand somewhere.

I understand the "punk" thing, and I wouldn't mind another phrase. "1950s retro-future" doesn't really do it for me since "dieselpunk" period starts supposedly with the common use of the internal combustion engine, and really shines when it's set before WWII. 50's is more Atomic age. And it's not as fun to say either. It's kind of like calling Coke "Caramel Colored Fizzy Sugar Water" .

Sorry to gravedig..

As a former member of the local punk/hardcore scene, I'm pretty well read so to say when it comes to the subcultures. There's your street punks (drunks and morons, pretty much the whole lot of 'em), crust punks (stoners..basically hippies but smellier), folk punks (see: former), etc.

Steampunk isn't really a subculture...it's more like a hobby for the more eccentric. I have a few art student friends, and they're into it. One is a sculptor by trade, and she's done some amazing things with old, broken clocks and watches. The other, a painter, has made herself a pretty cool pair of goggles and jewelry.

At least they're using the stuff, and I don't know them to ever use anything still working.

IF you happen to run across one, they're very, very useful contacts. They know all the best late victorian/early 20th century antique stores in the tristate area it seems.

A movie that I think portrays the "turn-of-the-last-century, science fiction, action adventure"* genre is _The Assassination Bureau, Ltd._ (1969), starring Oliver Reed and Diana Rigg. Its based on a Jack London short story, and, while played tongue-in-cheek, displays many of the facets of "High Technology in Edwardian Guise" that we have come to expect. And it has one of the best Zeppelin scenes ever committed to film.

I enjoy steampunk or retrofuturism very much. I enjoy the fantasy of films like "Bladerunner" (40s noir mix/ w. a 80's imagination of high-tech), "Brazil" and some of the french films like "City of Lost children".
