I admit to a lingering fondness for a couple of Hood products -- Hood out of Boston was for many decades the biggest dairy operation in New England. The "Hood Sport Sundae Bar" was a brick of vanilla ice cream with a streak of chocolate embedded in the middle, enrobed in a crunchy chocolate shell. You could only get it at Fenway Park -- or so it seemed, I never saw it in stores until recent years -- and it was pretty satisfying for what it was. And the famous Hoodsie Cup was a New England tradition for decades -- chocolate and vanilla ice cream marbled together in a small paper cup with a paper lid, and you ate it with a splintery little wooden spoon that made either flavor taste like pine.

You can still get Hoodsies today, but they're inferior to what they used to be, and no longer have Red Sox players on the underside of the lid. They gave up the latter promotion just before I became conscious of them, denying my generation the opportunity of licking ice cream off Tony Conigliaro's face. Sigh.

I don't know if it's a national or local brand, but "Mayfield" makes great ice cream.
Their butter pecan has more nuts per volume of any that I have ever had.
Tastes great, too... (not less filling)

Growing up in the '70s, the true ice-cream treat was stopping at a Howard Johnson and bringing some home for the freezer. My dad did not part with a dollar haphazardly, but when we pulled into a HoJo's and I was old enough to run in and buy the ice-cream myself, all of a sudden, bills started coming out of his wallet with the directions "and get 2 pints of this and a pint of that," of course, though, followed by the obligatory, "and bring me all the change." Whatever, we'd be having ice-cream for dessert for several nights!

A big treat in our family was when my dad decided we kids had earned a treat and he'd buy us each a (using his term) soft squeeze ice cream cone at the drugstore. I don't even know what they are really called. Chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry were the only flavors on offer. I always chose vanilla.

I wouldn't feed Sealtest today to my worst enemy's dog but I rate Ben & Jerry's pretty highly....
A locally born and bred ice cream treat are Dove Bars. They started making them by hand in a neighborhood candy shop until Mars took up the brand in 1985. The dark chocolate cover is prime candy quality, and the classic version features a French Vanilla inside.

I've occasionally tried B&J but the brand I favor is Haagen-Dasz. Its vanilla or butter pecan.
The Dove bars I never liked, too dark chocolatey; though Heath bars remain memorable.:)
______________

Got home last nite, fixed a sandwich, turned on the World Series and started some Breeder's Cup handicapping...fell asleep and awoke at midnite. Day starts at 04:00 reveille and the clock sometimes punches back with a knockout.
Just hate walking into a right cross when Verlander is on the mound.

...

Hagan Dasz - Rum Raison

B&J - Cherry Garcia

Good Humor - Toasted Almond bars

Breyers - Mint Chocolate Chip (would go up a notch with some green food coloring, yes I'm that shallow)

Dove - don't like any version

I could go on. I'm brand agnostic; it's all about each particular flavor.

Oreos? Nah forget them. Now these babies are the most, and if you dunk 'em in milk (or tea) . . . oh yeah!

I can't believe I missed the ice cream conversation. To all you unwashed infidels, there is only one real ice cream, and that's Blue Bell. Everything else is so far down the list it's not even worth mentioning.

As for Oreos, I'm a traditionalist. The real deal. Single stuffed.

I'm usually a traditionalist too - probably a common trait here at FL - but I had been making double stuffed Oreos before Oreo offered them. Since waste wasn't allowed in my house, I'd twist open the cookies, put the two cream sides together, eat the left over chocolate biscuits first and, then, indulge in the home-made double stuffed ones. Oreo just made my life easier when they came out with the double stuffed ones.

Turkey Hill seems to be one of the leading store brands here in the midwest, though there are a few boutique brands popping up.

A popular local ice cream that isn't in stores is Mitchel's. They've got some great flavors (and some odd ones- sweet corn, and a couple beer-based seasonals), but my complaint is that they're all too soft, and in some instances there's just something off about their approach to a traditional flavors - using milk chocolate in their chip ice creams. Anything other than dark just doesn't go right. Would you believe that their pistachio (one of my favorites) is NOT green?

Yet another failing of the midwest - too thick shakes, underdone pizzas and now too soft icecream.

Wednesday, I went to the next big city by rail. A guy with an greyish/olive M65 jacket stepped in with us. And he sat there with his jacket closed, all the 30 minutes. In our heated railcar! o_O

Blue Bell might be OK, if you don't have time to make your own. In a world where >75 USD will get an electric ice cream freezer, there isn't much point in putting up with commercial dreck.

These cheese balls are the usual american weekend-ration, right?
I don't know who eats as many of those as I see in stores. Those things and Cheetos would both be discontinued if they had to rely on me buying them. I've always suspected that they were similar to Peeps. None have been manufactured for several years, they just bring them out every season to display.
