Small blessing, I suppose, that I’ve lived the past half century in places (Seattle and environs, greater Denver) with little by way of annoying insects. My summertime visits back to the Upper Midwest, the land of my birth and early years, where the bugs are truly oppressive and where screens on doors and windows and porches are not optional, reminds me that it ain’t all bad out in gray and dreary Seattle and arid and wildly variable Denver.

The current invasion going on across America by the brown momerated stinkbug

They're just one of many species of shield bug. This particular species was bought in with Chinese imports & been in the US since the late 90's. They are currently making themselves at home in Europe too. You may see them more at this period though, as like with the native shield bugs, they will be entering houses to pass the winter but if anyone can tell the Brown Momerated Stinkbug apart from the many other indigenous varieties with just a glance, they've got better eyesight & greater entomological knowledge than me. :D

Use of the word "impact" as a verb, I.e., an alternative to "affect", or a noun to replace "effect".

I think the confusion comes from the confusing facts that affect and effect each have two syllables, begin with a vowel, and end in "ct", whereas impact has...

Oh, wait a sec...

Ah, I'd thought they were stink bugs too until now. They're currently EVERYWHERE! All over the house, all over the windows, they're a menace!

Usage pet peeves. I got my own, so I ain’t unsympathetic. Among the more recent is the use of “totally” to indicate agreement, to which I’m tempted to reply, “as opposed to partially?”

But popular usage trumps. So I generally save my breath. It’s usually a losing battle anyway.

You can tell they could care less.
I'd rather they keep their mouth shut!

This one is like fingernails scratching on a chalkboard:

Know-what-I-mean

When used repeatedly in a conversation.
It's very annoying....if you know what I mean!

"Amazing" as an all-purpose superlative makes my skin crawl. "Ohmahgawd, that was an AMAZING movie." "Ohmahgawd, that's an AMAZING pair of shoes." "Ohmahgawd, that's an AMAZING pie."
Around here I'd replace "amazing" with "awesome" and have the same results. It's reached the point where I avoid using the word "awesome" just for that reason--it's almost so over-used that it's lost it's true meaning.

'Could care less.' Why would someone say they 'could care less?' That means they care, and more than just the minimal amount. When I don't care I 'couldn't care less.'
