this was the same one i saw. Thin waist gives the perception of wide hips: One of the critical factors in bearing children.

Not always the case though...my hips are not all that wide, but, had an extremely easy time giving birth...first one, 4hours labor, 3 pushes...out- the rest was one of those rushing to the hospital before having it in the car! To some extent I wonder if heredity plays a big part in this since my own mother and grandmother were the same way?

I understand. But the perception of "wide hips = better birther" is apparently hard wired in the male brain . . .

 oh, I see....understandable! Anatomy wise, it would make perfect sense.

Designers want the people to display their clothes, not sculpt the clothing to the human form. I miss that.

And to comment on reetpleat's quote of Mr. Mix-A-Lot, cultures all over the world have different ascetics of beauty.

In parts of South Africa, women wrap large drapes around their waist to make their bums looks bigger.

In most cultures an ample woman meant her husband could provide for her, she was healthy enough to bare children, she could keep you warm, etc. It was expected, celebrated, to have a woman who was ample.

Wow, so off topic, sorry.

But the article does have a western slant to it, one with extreme body modification (not just tattoos or piercing as many cultures did/do).

But when it comes to the reported biological or subconscious attractiveness for a narrow waist, this does not preclude a woman from being zaftig. Anna Nicole Smith was a good example of a larger than typical model But generally had an hourglass shape. She was no rail thin waif model even in her early Playboy days.
Note Oprah appearing on her magazine cover about the time she turned 50 wearign a little shirt to show off her flat abs.
Its all about the shape.
I think part of the psychology of the narrow waist topic might be in an old joke.
Two old friends meet. Jane points at Sue's belly," Omigawd when are you due? Is it a boy or girl? Your husband must be so excited!"
Sue replies,"I'm _not_ pregnant..."

A perception of pregnancy might be hardwired into the male brain. Cuckold is not a desired role.

And may I point out that Queen Latifa is consisered zaftig (a word, incidentially if I hear in real life does to me what every few do, which is tick me right off), doesn't have flat abs and does all the product pitches thin actresses/models are doing.

Ask any woman, whose being honest, they'd rather not have the fat girl butt droop then a flat stomach.

I've read and heard that the area where the small of the back meets the buttocks is a hardwired hot zone, for both genders. The more curvature, the better.[huh]

Sure don't do nothing for me! This would be interesting to see how many people agree! This reminds me of a thread that was in the powder room awhile back about 'the ideal man'...9 out of 10 women in there were really into the broad shoulders (and of course the dreamy eyes:) )
There's one thing I"ve noticed and maybe you guys can answer this; Almost everytime I see teenage boys walking around town, at least one of them is raising up thier shirts, exposing their bellies,I noticed especially when there was a good looking girl nearby...what's up with this?Is this a nervous reaction most guys have? Is this like some weird mating call thing?:p

I've not known the word ZAFTIG to be negative.
I was just checking wikipedia for such terms as zaftig or full-figured & came upon this

They're flashing their abs. The girls will sometimes pop their tops as well, often sans brassiere.

All I can say is I'm mighty glad to have a fairly skinny waist, especially by British standards.

That and I blame cars for making people lose their waists. Think of catwalk models. Skinny as a rake and they spend all their time walking.

My tongue is in my cheek.

But on a serious note, I think these sorts of things do encourage people to not eat. Sadly, I think if you aren't an hourglass while carrying excess weight you won't become a time measuring device by losing a few stone.
