Has anyone ever had any trouble with sending vintage ties to the cleaners, as in has the material every deteriorated? Just curious.

I have really only had a problem once and that was on my honeymoon believe it or not. I sent the tie to the hotel cleaners to be cleaned. It came back in tatters. Needless to say I was mad. They did quite a bit of cleaning and mending of other clothes to make up for it---free.

Just picked these up on the bay, seller says they are from the 40s, what do you think?

They're good! I especially like the colors in the third one. You can wear it with a cream, very light yellow, brown, or even light blue/grey jacket or pants. That's a lot of versatility for one tie!

My guess is that they're from the 1930s.

these are difficult to date as they looked very similar all the way into the 60s. if they have any labels it would be great if you could show some pics !

In all my years of tie collecting, I've never found a good reference book/source for tie labels. This seems the perfect opportunity to send out a general inquiry--anyone know of one?

I've known several folks who collected vintage tie labels .... but as far as I know, no one has published them in a book.

The seller said that they came from a backroom in some place where they were originally made, so they may not have labels, but we'll see.

... now those are hard to get cleaned. My cleaner won't touch 'em for fear of the old paint coming off.

Would be interesting to see some of your tie labels. I have some that are fantastic - one for example from the 'Congo' brand. You can imagine how non-PC that one is.

And, I was right. No labels. They do look a lot better than in the picture though, and they are most assuredly rayon(and have a nice sheen to them that isn't readily noticable in the picture as well).

The width of your ties will help you to figure out their age. Knit ties from the '50s and '60s were a little bit narrower than those of the '30s, and a half inch narrower than '40s knits.

She's a nice girlie!

The darker ground in the 1st tie is actually a dark olive green(don't know if you can see that)- so it will go with many of my ensembles.
