Some of these patterns are just genius... The palette and the visual balance. What kind of professionals were employed designing these? Commercial artists/illustrators?

None jump out at me screaming modern. As many designs as I've seen they all have the potential to be vintage. I'd have to see the reverse.

Well I am sure the Gucci one is fairly modern although in a very vintage package. I'll see when I get my hands on them though.

They did indeed bring in artists to design ties for the post war period until about the mid-fifties. They actually had to as they were running out of new ideas in house. Ties were flying off the shelf so fast in those days. There were collectors who amassed huge collections. Actor Danny Kaye was one of them.
You will see ties signed by famous artists and designers too. A Dali tie brings quite a bit nowadays. You would also see designers such as Tina Leser and Countess Mara in the mix. This was the period where designer labels started.

I know a lot of people don't like those trevira ties. I don't have a problem with them: simply wear them with the right outfit. I have quite a few of them. A late fifties, or 1960s old mans suits, look perfect with ties like that.
