So my "big tie score" came in today. Let me break it down for you all.

The box was bursting.

Looks promising!

So far so good. These are the gems.

Then there's the WTF?
IMG_0998.jpg

Then there's the damn shame (irreparable)

And the bulk of the lot are literally about 50 early 60's skinny ties. I'm not kidding, all brands, styles, in varying conditions. I will sell them to someone for $5 + shipping if anyone wants them.

As one who is prone to grouse at times about high prices on vintage ties that plague us here in the Big Apple, I felt it behooved me to share the two bargains I recently picked (at just $2 each).

The color of the second tie is in between the hues found in these two scans, but it's closer to the first than the second. Though a bit grungy when I bought it, it came out looking very clean and sharp indeed. Not sure what that coloration is at the larger end of the tie in the first scan, but it's not there when viewing it in person.

And I found interesting the band of green on the brown tie. I suspected it was meant to render a green knot with no other hint of emerald showing, but try as I might, I haven't been able to make that happen. There's always a slash of green showing beneath the knot (I'm tying it very short, but perhaps not short enough).

Two dollar ties in NYC? You got lucky!!

I know, right? Got 'em at the Garage flea market on 24th Street. They were all wadded up and uncared for, and the guy was charging just two dollars per. The brown one was clearly in good shape, but the greenish grey one was a bit of a risk. But at that price plus a trip to the dry cleaners, I figured it was worth taking a chance. Paid off nicely.

I dug through the bin hoping to strike further gold, but these were the only two of interest.

I think I would ignore the green in this example. It doesn't actually look like a knot planned tie. The contrasting color area is far too small to make a decent knot out of it.

Those are great ties. Good score there. :eusa_clap

I dug around in my picture file and found a picture with one of my knot planned ties. The red and white stripe tie is a knot planned tie. The smaller red and white pinstripe area makes a nice contrasting knot. Notice how the knot area is straight across and not diagonal

So James, you're saying that the green is supposed to extend below the knot? It just sort of peeks out of the knot at an angle (kind of like it peeks out from the border in the first picture). An interesting enough effect, if that's what it's meant to do (the wife really likes it).

I am not quite sure what the original intent was with such a small area of the tie that color. I would say just tie it and let the color fall where it may. :p

As JP mentioned, it really isn't a knot planned tie, but it is interesting. Like the "Catalina Spices" line on the other tie!

I spent last weekend up in Glasgow. Whilst my wife and son spent the day visiting museums, myself and my daughter trawled the vintage shops. I was mainly looking for ties. I found lots. Scotland is always great for wool ties - perfect to wear with tweed jackets.

I can never resist suede ties. The collection is growing (about six so far). What I need are a wider range of colours, other than green and brown:

I can never resist Tootal ties. This one is from the 'special quality' range:

I've recently found a number of these 'Duratye' ties. I know some people don't like terylene, but i like the style:

Here's another terylene tie. It's a nice simple pattern and will look good when paired with a blue shirt:

As ever, I can't resist a nice knitted tie. These are modern Italian silks, but fit perfectly onto my tie rack. the first is from 'Paul Stuart':

This one doesn't have a label (except one that says 'Made in Italy'):

Here are the wool ties that I found:

The first has the label 'Munrospun':

Here's a close up:

A simple grey wool tie by 'Grenville':

And here's the last one. By 'Craigmill':
