Many antique dealers start out as pickers. I knew a very successful dealer that had at least 6 pickers at any time.
There definitely is an "eye" for antiques. Like a cook or artist. You are born with it though some can learn it I don't believe all is the same.
I like to think I have an eye for it though online you have to list constantly to get traffic and this is hard to do every day with the high end items. Plus it demands different likes and cost ranges.
Why you do see smaller or lower end items a lot of the time on various places on the net. Catch 22.
Selling since 1996 and a collector forever.

I'm currently on holiday in Singapore, visiting family and enjoying Chinese New Year. A couple of days ago, dad and I headed to the Thieves' Market on Sungei Road, Singapore. The Thieves' Market is Singapore's oldest flea-maket (in continuous operation since the 1930s). While there, I stumbled across this very neat fountain pen:

It is a 1970s Sheaffer Targa 1005 squeeze-filler fountain pen. The exact model that my father was once gifted by his older sister, as a wedding-present. It was a set (FP & BP), but the fountain pen was stolen years ago.

Now that I have it back, I'm going to reunite the set.

That's a Corona Sterling -- very nice machine, I learned to type on one very similar to that. They were first made in 1940, and remained pretty much unchanged thru 1948 -- postwar they were branded "Smith Corona," so this one is a prewar model. Take good care of it, and it'll last forever.

My vintage living room.

Recently Divorced with very little I needed some furniture for my home.
I managed to find a 1930s sofa and chair need re upholstering for 60.00 for the set
A waterfall vanity desk for 10.00
A vintage swan lamp 5.00
Vintage or repro side table 8.00
and my fave piece a 1937 Spectron Cabinet radio- most expensive at 75.00-but hey it was so unusual I couldnt pass on it.
Unfortunately now my computer and Television look so out of place, Im thinking Armoires for them.
The Sofa and chair were craigslist and everything else was thrift store finds.

The Radio is all original even down to the cloth wire and the tubes...but Im afraid to plug it in, so its a conversation piece as of now. I even found a sunbeam Mix master with the two bowls works for 4.00.

Im loving my old new stuff.

WOW... you got some smokin' hot deals on that stuff! My eyes are bugging out at that sofa and chair!!! YOU STOLE THAT STUFF!!! Now, may I make a suggestion? Since that IS the original upholstery, I would try and salvage as much as you can. The cushions on the chair and sofa are insanely rare and can not be duplicated by most upholstery shops... The photos may be lying to me but, they look to be in good shape. If you can find some dark brown mohair like the original, I would save the needle point work from the tops of the cushions and have them re-used when you have that work done. I have seen this same sofa and chair in most of the early 30s Sears catalogs I've seen... beautiful!

The radio is amazing... you say Spectron? I'm not sure I've heard of that make, sure it's not Sparton? It looks like a Sparton to me. Nevertheless, that set is RARE and should be enjoyed, restored and kept! Great cabinet design and the magic eye... oh, what a radio!

All in all, you got some neat stuff that could be restored but, enjoyed as is for now... it is only original once as they say. I'd keep it just as it is if it were mine.

OMG- Yes its a Sparton radio, I knew that too. Mis spelled for what ever reason. Its missing the front glass and 2 knobs, Ive got emails out to see if I can find replacements. The Grill cloth is original too.
As for the couch and chair- the pictures make them look better then they are. All of the springs in the units have to be retied, all of the stuffing has to be replaced. I got an estimate of 1,800 to fix it. I did plan on using the mohair as the replacement but only 1 seat tapestry is worth saving. I thought about trying to save the other cushions as pillows.
I do enjoy them, glad I stole them too- Thanks for the compliments, everyone else I know thought I was off my rocker for choosing that sofa set over a Free couch.

Well, just a quick note, when you have the sofa and chair re-done, see if you can find some needle point covers in the same colors an maybe in a pattern that will be close to the originals... not exact but, do the same treatment so to speak... you know what I mean?

There are ways to replace the dial glass or what not on your Sparton... can't recall who does the re-props but, you can find it on the net. As for knobs, good luck! Sparton knobs are hard to find and not sure if anyone reproduces them. If they're wood, you may have some remade by a wood worker.

Great stuff nevertheless! I'll see if I can't upload some images from the '36 Sears catalog I have to show you that your sofa and chair are dead ringers for what I've seen in the catalogs... I'm almost sure they are Sears.

1950s RCA Reel To Reel Recorder and Player

Found this not at a thrift store, but somewhere in Detroit which I shall not disclose! Paid $25 for it. Runs on 12AX7 tubes and one other (the original RCA 12AX7 was gone when i bought it, as those alone are worth about $40).

It records, and replays just fine. Has a small 4" onboard speaker.

The RCA logo lights up when it runs, as well as the arrows.

The 'Overload' and 'Normal' lights are actually mini tubes/valves. The overload light functions in real time, flickering when the mic input starts to get too loud.

The Microphone is very heavy, cast steel or iron. Olive green cloth cable and gold dust cloth behind the grille.
