What's "Heitai"?

A Japanese soldier.

The book is entitled Heitai: Uniforms, Equipment & Personal Items of the Japanese Infantryman 1931-1945 by Agustin Saiz (Madrid: Andrea Press, 2011). The section on personal items is quite extensive including examples of and a history of prewar Japanese cameras, watches, pens, etc.

Good finds VC. But I am sure you are thinking the same thing as me, how sad that some ones Air Medal wound up in a sale! Still, would rather see you get it then some Cretonne!

It turns out that the medal is a post Vietnam modern version. I was hoping to find an example from WWII for my USAAF collection.

Saw this at a yard sale today. Asked about the price and it was the best price ever! It turns on but needs new bulbs. It has the round two prong plug so I am hoping it is older and now I just need a desk to go with it. Now, how do I clean underneath where the bulbs go? Can I just use 409 to clean it up?

You can use 409 just be careful not to get it in the sockets. If you do then you need an electrical contact cleaner. Come to think of it, you need that around anyway for other projects. Go get some!

Very good! That lamp looks like the ones we had around in the 70s when I was in school. Of course they were probably old even then.

Thanks. I took it to the local Pro Shop to have it resurfaced. There were a few minor nicks and scratches on it that I wanted the guy to get out. He said it would be ready tomorrow. That means it will be massacring pins Thursday.

Manufacturer: T(homas) Gaunt. Optician. Melbourne & Sydney.

Thomas Gaunt lived from 1829-1890. His shop ran from about 1856 until 1890. It continued after he died, but I'm not sure when the business itself ended. After 1890 products were marked: "T. Gaunt & Co", apparently. So I assume that this dates to the late 1880s at a minimum.

Restoration question:

One of the lenses is scratched. Is this something which an optician can polish out?

As a graduate of Michigan State University, it was neat to find these ladies bloomers today. MSU had several name changes but was known as Michigan State College from 1925 to 1955. I believe these are likely from the 50s. They seem a strange item to make/sell for the time, however... perhaps they were marketed as souvenirs for ***** raids?

Back in the '90s (B.C. - before children) there was a guy in Atlanta who made these tables. He made all kinds of really cool looking ones.He had a store where he sold them along with all sorts of vintage ephemera.
