Love it, Jimmy. I wouldn'tve passed it up for that price, either!

I might've offered a buck less, just on principle.

Nah, not really. On an occasion or three I've actually given a seller more than he or she was asking, just to stay right with the cosmos.

What sometimes stuns me is the caliber of goods still left at a garage/yard/estate sale on the second day.

I'd been wanting a bentwood style coat rack for a while, like the one used by the Forth Doctor on Doctor Who. I didn't realize how close I'd gotten to the Season 16 version until I got home. $9 at an estate sale.

I would have offered less if I noticed the oscilating arm was missing and that someone had been using it in their kitchen. Man it was greasy!:eusa_doh:
The second day is somethimes the best because all the good stuff they were asking too much money for is usually half price. ;):p That and if you wait until later that night then sometimes they put free stuff out at the curb. :p

Yup. That sometimes works in "retail" establishments (antique/vintage stores, etc.) as well. I've had proprietors refuse my offer on an item only to have them accept my even lower offer a month or two later, once they've realized they'll likely be waiting an awful long time for a buyer willing to pay the asking price.

A family member was once a partner in a secondhand junk/auction business. That little enterprise gathered much of its inventory at garage/estate/moving/etc. sales, where they would come armed with a wad of cash, a box truck and a couple of strapping young men to load up the loot. People a day or two from moving across the country seldom refuse minimally reasonable offers for the stuff they'd just as soon not be dealing with any longer.

Picked up this delightful deco blonde wood box with what looks like a little bakelite handle. Not sure of the function...it has a mirror inside the top. Jewelry box? Makeup? It's about 4"x6".

If it has little divisions inside, then it's a jewellery-box, for rings and cufflinks and necklaces and whatnot.

Today, I bought this for $4 at the local thrift shop:

I had a blech day!

Blech as in the German word for tin. I was at a vintage toy show today and I picked up this beauty on my "Holy Grail" List. It's a prewar Schuco "Examico 4001" car (circa 1939). Modeled after the 1938 BMW 328, it's clockwork-powered with working steering, gearshift (including reverse), brakes and clutch. It was probably one of the earliest examples exported to the US before the war because according to the seller it originally belonged to an old friend of his (now deceased) who had it as a kid in New York. "Prewar" examples were still made during the war because, unlike the US and Britain, Germany never really curtailed the production of consumer goods until fairly late in the war when the tide started to turn against them.

Edit: I've replaced some of the original pics with some better ones.

Postwar examples say on the bottom "Made in US Zone Germany" or "Made in Western Germany"

I picked up a whole bunch of old pinbacks on Sunday. These were my favorites.

The pictures came out blurry. Leahy Chevrolet was Portage's Chevy dealership for many years. The date on the license plate keychain is 1965.

As some of you may know, I'm a die-hard Lawrence Welk Show fan, so I couldn't turn down this 'wunnerful' ad!

We had a single-bulb fixture like this at the top of the stairs in the hall, in the farmhouse when I was growing up. I remember well seeing that light flick on and knowing it was time for school! The plug is also interesting.

The other advertising piece is for the Co-Op in Columbus, where I spent my K-8 Childhood.

I wasn't sure where to ask this question so please feel free to move it to a more appropriate thread if there is one - I saw this sideboard at a salvage yard (my first trip there - I LOVED it - it was such a mix of old/new and some amazing finds) - anyway I was wondering if any of you had opinions on what decade this is from - I originally thought 30's/40's but now am wondering whether it's 50's/60's - any thoughts would be much appreciated!
