Hunting and Gathering, Part I...

Boys and Girls,

You know, it occurred to me that, since I've stepped out of the shadows and joined the Fedora Lounge, I haven't really shown any specific signs of wearing, purchasing, or enjoying vintage clothnig, apart from a few formalwear questions...

Now, part of that is that I'm not a picture-taker. I'm usually too busy driving or dancing or getting dressed or undressed or trying to make things turn out well to think of preserving the moment. I'm also presently separated from my camera.

However, I'm (perhaps unfortunately) NOT separated from Ebay or other digital troves of vintage clothing, and so I've been secretly squirrelling away goods over the past couple of weeks, some of which I will, with your indulgence, share. Photographs of your (not very) humble narrator will soon follow, most likely from Paris.

I've been fleshing out the Edwardian and formalwear Departments of my wardrobe lately - Here are some of the results:

First, a 3-piece frock suit, or "ditto suit" from 1906, complete with original waistcoat and swell high-waisted trousers that are longer at the heel. I know it was considered bad form to wear a suit made entirely of one fabric, but dash it, one must work with what Fate provides. Besides, I can probably wear the trousers shown with the Morning Suit below to get 'round the controversy...

Back of trousers need a little lint-rolling, but they're in good shape. Pic lightened to show detail.

Next I emerged from the smoke of a shoot-out with this 1913 Morning Suit, which I have every intention of making good use of:

Part Two: The Return of the Prodigal...

Next on the list was a set of evening tails and DB waistcoat from 1902. Sadly, no trousers, but I'll either have elves whip up a set to match, or else I'll have the whole shebang reproduced:

Jumping a couple of decades, I laid hands on this 1930's Dinner Suit with a black vest in the mix:

And since my wallet could still be handled without asbestos gloves, I moved into accessories:

Always liked these better than straight or collapsible. The hatcase still has the original key! I'm having the box restitched, though, just to make sure nothing embarrassing happens. To quote a fellow worth listening to, "There's nothin' more foolish than a man chasing his hat."


I don't know if I'll actually wear these, but there's something wonderful to me about the idea of memorializing a pretty lady now long-since dust on the front of my best clothes...

And just in case I'm called to a formal supper in Constantinople (don't say it):

Don't know just what I'll do with 'em, but I had to have 'em. Probably sit 'round the place and smoke my hookah in them. I have a robe that matches nicely...


Last, but not least, I travelled forward in time yet again and grabbed this swell 1940's DB topcoat. At least this is practical (or as practical as I get), since it's getting cold here.

And thus Ebay and my bank account are trampled into dust, and I am the most well-dressed chap in the bread line. Ah well, you live once.

In all the hubbub, I almost forgot this mildly distressed but pretty little 3-piece suit from the 1930s. Nothing a little reweaving won't fix:

This is still one of the best garments I've ever seen.

A new 30s robe. When i saw it i knew i had to have it. Grey wool with wonderful piping. Fits great. just in time for winter!

The vents on the chest are a particularly cool deco feature. The baroness reckons they reminded her of the grille on old VWs. Love the turned back cuffs, too.

a Royal Robe. I see ads for Royal Robes in the 30s issues of Apparel Arts.

You like that one, eh? I must admit the piped gills/vents still capture my interest . . . even after a year or so of ownership.

It's just too light for the current weather so it's been packed away until spring. Out comes the heavyweight lined silk number!
