Found this on tumblr with the title "Spring 1932" and no additional information.
Great fabric and confusing trousers. At first I didn't recognize them as plus fours (they are?) and then I saw the double watch pockets. Amazeballs.

I read once that his suits were loosely based on styles from the late 1970s, Which would make sense, since the original book, Red Dragon, Takes place in 1980...

well some of the styles of the seventies were taken from the 30s.
not saying its a 30s suit. But its always a peak lapel 3 piece suit with a great silhouette

This photograph is extremely intriguing to me, because it demonstrates a very late use of an extremely common Victorian style, namely the wing collar with four-in-hand necktie and an informal suit. I absolutely love this look, not least because it's extremely Victorian, but also because it adds just a pinch more decorum to an otherwise informal suit. Certain style guides I've read have gone so far as to call this a faux-pas, but I disagree. It was once extremely common, but to see it in a 1940s (?) film is surprising.

Albert Einstein, incidentally, was very fond of wearing a four in hand with a wing collar, as was Neville Chamberlain.
